Looking for other peoples opinions on what factory loads they are using and what they find works for them. I just set up a new Sako finlight in a 300 win. mag and have found that it doesnt like some loads but is quite consistant with the Hornady 180g SST. What works for you and doesnt. Thanks
Federal blue box 180 Gr Speer hot core shoots great in my rem 700, but I had a really ugly bullet failure on an elk this year. I shot the bull broadside in the ribs, a measured 12" ahead of the diaphragm. Found copper fragments and bloodshot all through the guts...real ugly.
Mine does not like boat tail bullets other than Barnes TSX and TTSX.
I went through this exercise last year after my new rifle arrived only a few weeks before the planned hunt. My previous rifle, a browning A bolt in 7 my RM really liked light bullets and eventually I used 140 gr nosler partition for everything. I expected my CZ 550 to prefer light for caliber as well, but it preferred heavy. The 180 grn SSt grouped well but had disastrous terminal ballistics at closer range I found out the hard way. I am not completely done with picking a factory round in 300 wm for my CZ, but the 200 grn ELDx group great. Have not tried them on an animal yet. What I am getting at is let the rifle do half the work when choosing a factory round in any caliber.
My family's 300's (2 tikka t3's and a model 70 winchester) all like the Winchester Accubonds and the Nosler Accubonds in 180 grain. I make my own handloads for them now using accubonds but when we were shooting factory those 2 were top performers.
