Default Weatherby mark v

Well I finally found the rifle I'm going to buy I was taking to a hunter yesterday and for giggles I asked what he was shooting and he let me see his mark v ultralight in 270 wby and I fell in love did it ever feel good! Any one have any reviews on them? I looked st the ballistics and it sure seems like a laser beam. There isn't many reviews online about the rifle

I've never owned an Ultralight but I presently have a Deluxe in 270 Wby, it definitely is a flat shooter!
I must have a good quality barrel because I'm cronographing my hand loads about 100 fps faster than what the load data says they should be doing.
I usually tinker with rifles to see how well I can make them shoot but I've never done anything to this one and it puts 3 in a row, 130 grain Acubonds into 7/8 inches at 100 yards all day long, no exceptions and no flyers as long as I do my part. The bullets seem to settle down a bit after that and will do about 2.5 inch groups at 300 yards consistently. It will do the same accuracy with 150 grain Game Kings with not quite as flat of a trajectory. I realize this isn't an exceptionally high degree of accuracy but it's not bad at all for an out of the box rifle and more than adequate for any but the longest range hunting shots.

The Mark V ultra lights are great guns, as long as you don't get them in a big calibre. Stick to under 300 Bee and they are great. The 257 and 270 are prefect in the UL model. 300 Bee and up they kick too hard. I have always liked Weatherby as a factory gun, particularly since they make them in left hand. Great shooting gun, well made and easy to load for.

I've had two ultralights, but both were on the 6-lug (non magnum) action. Very nice handling and shooting rifles.

Very nice rifles, but imo wayyyyy past the point of diminishing returns. Price I'm seeing is $2600 new.

That's well into custom territory.

Case in point: same performance and features out of an xbolt hells canyon speed for $1100 less (new price $1500). That is your cost of a really good scope/rings. Add in the cost of weatherby ammo or brass, and the reduced barrel life...not for me. That being said, I've spent way more for far worse reasons than a new gun.

Weatherby Ultra light. I sold one recently in 257 Bee. It was a nice rifle, pointed well and shot sob moa with very little effort. I have a 270 Weatherby that I use as 1 of my 2 primary hunting rifles, it is chambered in a Sako 995 rifle however. But I digress, between my nephew and I it has accounted for 3 elk, 1 moose and 3 white tails, and I've only owned it for 3 years. With a well constructed bullet it will handle most anything in North America.

Leo,

i agree with the previous guys posts as well.
i wished i had the 270wby instead of the 257.
it is a real sleeper of a round. i dont think youll be disapointed as it is probably the (dare i say!) 'best' calibre for north america situations. i have no proof but i just think it hasnt been marketed as aggressively as the flagship wby257 and the 300wby.
wby has probly spent more on marketting there new 6.5 offering...actually you may want to look at this one as well.
if your not a reloader you should consider starting.

I have an Ultra Light in 300 WBY. Yes it kicks, buts it's not too much. Especially not for hunting that only requires 1 or 2 shots anyways. I like it, but the price on them these days is a bit high.

I rebarreled a Rem to a 270 bee. Great round probably my favorite and as others have said very under rated. Also have a 300 bee in an Accumark. It is a touchy/picky shooter but once I got it dialed in and adjusted the trigger its a very good shooter. If they offered a ultra light in left handed 270 I'd buy it in a second.

I found my Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight at on sale at Cabelas, loved the fit and the Weatherby action, not much beats it.

The original barrel did not perform to my expectations so I had my gunsmith replace the barrel with a #3 Wilson Match Grade barrel then glass bed and free float it, now at 200 yards it is shooting 1/4" groups and I love it!

This is my modified Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight rifle in 300 Win Mag. "This is my Rifle, This is my gun"

Should have mentioned now @ 800 yards I am getting 4 1/2" Groups, but I had to replace Weatherby's #2 contour barrel, it simply didn't cut the mustard.

Never trust a thin, light barrel!

Please don't exaggerate like this. If you post pics, I will certainly apologize, and give you a Tim Horton's card in the mail.

Yes. Anyone who claims 1/4" groups at 200 yards with a pencil barreled, lightweight rifle is exaggerating. Feel free to post pics and earn a Tim's card.

200 yards 1/4" consistantly? That would rival most bench rigs.

Did I not say that I changed the barrel from a #2 to a #3 or did you miss that? The original factory barrel would never shoot the way the new Wilson barrel does .

What is your point?

My point is that I am sure I am not alone in wanting to admire your 1/4" groups at 200 yards.

All you need to do that is the proper rifle and some skill my friend. I am sure you have the skill.

Nope. Have had a few benchrest rigs. 1/2" fairly regularly at 100. Never 1/4" at 200. Quite sure I don't have the skill.

I love seeing tiny groups and admire the skill that goes into them. Post up some pics. I know lots of my buddies that shoot regularly, and post on AO, would also love to see em.

Let's go shooting together instead, anyone can fake a picture! After the hunting season of course, got skunked for moose in 541 if you have seen the thread I posted and I need to fill my freezer!

That guy was amazing! He could free hand 5/5 on a pie plate at 500m. He also used Nosler factory ammo! All he did was twist the turret and it was done!
