january cow ELK
managed to get a cow elk tag for january 2014 in wmu 539
north of GP
wondering if anyone knows any land owners or have any experience in that zone

Buy a county map, go for a little scouting drive. Look for likely habitat and start asking.

I assume you mean the late season, which starts at the end of December? Not sure about that WMU but all I can say is, park the truck and put some time in on foot. A lot of the Elk herds in this area are fairly big, and once there's snow on the ground it's pretty easy to find their hang outs. I hunt cows in 522 (a little further north of GP).

When it comes to that time call the local F&W, usually they will have some numbers of local farmers with elk problems. Worked for a friend of mine last year.

Yes - don't be afraid to ask for permission if need be... last year there were so many PO'd farmers in 522, they were talking about poaching due to herds of 100+ destroying their winter's hay in a matter of hours.

Yup. Look for farmers with hay bales still in the field.

You betcha, or alfalfa fields. The alfalfa stays green for a long period of time.

I'm that friend. Stop into the F&W office in spirit river. Speak with Norm and enjoy cause from what I've heard this will be his last year. make sure to show up with a county map and a felt marker. See u up there!!
