Kimber hands down. Kimber is a better built rifle and if the one you get shoots like mine you will be vey happy.
The vanguard is no where near the quality and it is cheaper to buy as well.

Just my opinion

Both are great rifle, but I sure would love to add a kimber to my collection!

There aren't (m)any factory guns I wouldn't take a kimber over but I'm a little biased. The vanguard is very agricultural compared to a kimber.

Why the 8400... do you want a wsm? If it's a cartridge they offer in the 84l go that route, or a 84m if you want a standard short action.

Why not the 8400?

If you want quality , buy a Heym BA or a Blaser R93 with interchangeable barrel/ calibers,,

If you never have held, shot one you won't know the quality available in firearms,

There us also a new line of Blaser/Norma Magnum cartridges on the market .

The 8400 feels pregnant compared to the slim lines of the 84l.

If you do a bit of work on either a new 8400 or a Mk V (or supposedly Accumark), you'll have something quite nice. But the 8400 will likely just need a good barrel. The 8400 is a stouter rifle/action than 84L too, and it would be my first choice over the lighter one. Vanguard? -Nah. Better to get something cheaper and used, figure out what you want to mod, then spend a bit more and wait a half year on a good smith.

For the money, a semi-custom would give you a better rifle than anything less than something top-end. Even then, any production product is a compromise and many people will want to mod at least something or other. For example, I can't stand not having cheek height and pull adjustment (or at least a good fit) on a stock. So I don't want to pay 1/3 of the price on a new rifle which just goes towards finishing a nice-looking piece of walnut.

I can't even remember how many Kimbers I have had. It's gotta be close to ten. All were easy to get to moa, and most were able to shoot 1/2" groups on occasion. They fit me better than anything. There is nothing not to like.

I have also had and enjoyed a handful of Weatherby's, including a Mark V Ultra Lightweight which would be a competitor with a Montana. I would have to toss a coin between the two. Both are excellent factory rifles.

The one area I give a definite nod to the Kimber is the trigger.

If you can get a gently used Kimber Classic in an 84L or 84M for $1000 you have got a good gun for a good price.

Finally, as has been said, the 8400 has a different action and stock configuration which does feel pregnant and adds weight. I have had 8400s, but won't again in the future.

Blaser R93 doesn't exist anymore. Replaced by R8.

It comes pretty much finished as a complete entity though, and requires buying expensive parts (barrel, bolt, or Picatinny rail) to make any well-defined modifications. Anything less well-defined, such as stock re-configuration or a heavier barrel unavailable for smaller calibers, probably means chopping up an expensive rifle.

Fun action though, I almost bought one in 300WM. But overall it was a bit light for my tastes, and didn't like spending that much cash just on a very flashy piece of [non-adjustable] walnut.

At least compare the Kimber to a Mark V. That'd be a fair fight.

I don't disagree with you at all but there are times when you want something that only comes in the 8400. In my case I wanted a Montana in 338 win mag and it took me a very long time to find one. When I did I hated how it felt compared to my 84l so I went shopping for a stock and had a win with the Pendleton composite I picked up off another member here. It slimmed the rifle right back down, gave me bottom metal and now I've got the .338 that I wanted, scope, rings and rifle 7lbs 3 oz.

Well....nuff said....i went with the kimber 8400. And i did put the 8400 and the 84L side by side and yes theres is a difference on how wide at the action the 8400 is compared to the slimmer 84L....however the 84L was only available in 3006 and i really wanted a 300 wsm bc i could aleays load down to a 3006 and load up as required.... it would have been nice to have the 84L in 300wam which i dont think they make...but wither way im very happy with it...after all the difference between the two is 1/2 lb ....which is significant to some people...but to someone like me who is known to carry a Sako Trg 42 in the 400s ....means little so in the end....im very very impress with this rifle.

Ps: the trigger is like butter....waoooooooo omg

Depending on budget

Swaro Z3 3-9x36

Leupold Vx3i in 2.5-8x36

Leupold vx2 2-7x33

Either I would have it sitting in some tally rings.

I agree the vx6 x50 would be a sweet scope. If you're not worried about weight I'd stick with leupold rings too. The Talley's are awesome but I haven't seen a set that looks as good and finished as the leupold. On such a nice looking rifle I think you gotta go with the nicer ring. I'm jealous, never owned a Kimber and want one bad.

Leupold or Swaro, something in the 36 to 40 mm objective range since 50 mm is too bulky and heavy on a carry rifle. The power is of lessor importance, 3 - 9 or 4 - 12, something like that.

That's like putting an elephant on a monkeys back. Way to big for a lighter hunting rifle.
