Default Free float?

Trying to trouble shoot some issues on a friends rifle. I generally bed and float all my center fire bolt guns but in this case I want to rule out everything I can before I start messing with his gun. Any ideas as to how one might shim the rifle such that it simulates a free floated barrel without actually removing material from the stock? Gun is Ruger M77.

It's a flat receiver, use a bread bag clip.

On my M77 I just went ahead and free floated it by sanding material out of the stock. It shot much better and I packed that rifle for over 30 years and it went through some major abuse all my fault of course but to this day shoots MOA no problem and likely better if I am doing my part.
