The turkeys are where you find them....you will need maps, boots and fuel.

I got drawn as well, and I'm looking forward to it. It's a totally new end of the province for me, as well as a first with the birds.

Any tips are appreciated!

Thanks for the help lol I live in southern Alberta and do see turkeys on a reg basis but as its a long tag to get maybe I can get that extra advantage with some tips. I was out touring yesterday and seen a few hens with chicks that was nice to see and seen a few nice toms last fall. Like I said if ya have any good info on a location you have seen them often pm me or if you are also lucky enough to get draw on me and I can help ya if I find any good info on these critters. Most of us are not used to hunting turkeys so we don't become skilled at it 👍🏻

Default Congrats your huntING habits may change forever

I was drawn several years ago . It was more fun than I imagined ,like elk hunting. Met great people and now I go turkey hunting to montana and even a Guided hunt in kettle creek BC for turkeys . I would suggest heading out Bellevue, Coleman and Blairumour area. Where there's cattle theirs turkeys, look at both public and private land you will love it

Well duh you dumb arse. You shoulda waited to draw until you hooked up with someone in the know. I 999'd my turkey till I go someone experienced to hook up with. Not this year, but next year as I now have a mentor.

Default Have Fun

Can't help with location but I have shot lots of turkeys back in Ontario.
Plan to dress in full camo, once you have a location scout it for the roosting location. (tall trees) and get in early before daylight. Set up within 150 yards of the roost and let everything get quiet.
As daylight gets going use a hen call (box ones are easiest) and do a call or two. If the gobblers are nearby they will answer with a gobble. Now here is the hard part, don't overcall. It's tempting to use the call a lot when they are gobbling but every time you do your providing information to them that you may not be as great looking as you sounded in the low light.
They will pinpoint your location from a call or two and will come to your spot to look for the hen. You should have a decent hen decoy set up about 25 yards away. Once again if you see a tom coming avoid calling, they will gobble constantly, maybe a cluck or two but limit the calls or they will hang up trying to figure out what's going on. If one comes in and gets his fan up in full strut then they get kinda dumb (thinking with wrong head) wait till he turns to block his view with the fan and pull up slowly and flatten him. I have shot turkeys before that were strutting with other males around the decoy and had to get up and shoo the other birds away.
They are sensitive to movement and sound but are very fun to hunt. Nothing like the sound of a big gobbler heading your way to get you pumped up.
Have fun.

The thing I learned from hunting them....do not shoot them with the shot gun when they are strutting, wait till they stop and extend the head and neck. They don't have a big kill zone and the feathers are like body armour.

I was using a bow but I saw a turkey get rolled by the shotgun and run away.

Strut is fine if u hit the head and neck like your supposed to Bad part of a strut shot is u run the risk of cutting the beard off or destroying the fan , or both. Rolled usully means too far or frontal body shot A quick followup shot , especially if he was running strait away might have solved that problem. Just my 2 cents

Default Jake decoy

An oldtimer gave me only one trick a few years ago, he said it was the only trick I needed to harvest a tom.

If using a Jake decoy, make sure to position him facing your blind location, or close to the direction of your blind. As you make hen sounds, that tom will tear up the jake decoy and make his way to the hen sound, you, or go the direction the jake was facing before getting mauled by the ferocious tom.

It has worked like a charm.

No draw needed here in Manitoba, more and more hunters getting into the gobbler hunting. Numbers are growing. They are constantly relocating flocks from the city here.

Very neat to see the tom tear apart the jake decoy, he meant business !!
