Mother of all Skunks
Made the big move on August 09th from Beaumont to Sylvan, downsized big time, now to get settled.
We had a skunk problem, Peppy had a family, in the past 8 days I relocated 5 skunks that made their home in the culvert under Lakeshore Drive and visit our condo complex in Sylvan.
They just can't resist the Sobey's left over prime rib bones with a bit of fat, my trail cam has pic's of them digging under & humping the trap!
The juveniles weighed about 8 lbs, however, I got the Mother of All Skunks, she weighed approx 15-18 lbs. Have a look at the pic's, particularly the second, note the size of her head, as well the entrance is 8"x8" and this one can barely make it in.
Wonder if they can find their way back here following the yellow line from the wilds of Eckville!

That is a different looking live trap. The one I have is just an ordinary cage and it is always a struggle deciding what to do with the skunk once we catch him. I know for a fact that they CAN spray inside my cage style trap so they usually end up being shot from a distance and we deal with the smell for a few days.
I would have to surmise from your post that the skunks do NOT spray inside your trap? I think I would like to get one of those.
Regards,
Dave.

Thanks Zip-Z. I spent about that much to buy the one we have. I guess the next time I am in UFA I will buy that kind of trap.

Dave .... this is what they look like in the day light .... I modified it and installed a clear plexiglass window to ensure it's a skunk not someone's cat. I use bailing wire to tie on an old steak bone & secure it to the handle so the critter's don't sneak in and rob it, it's improved my catch ratio by 100%. The trap fits into a large black garbage bag & then in the back of my truck, never had a problem with squirts, however, they chit in it and it needs to be hosed out on every catch.
Note the number of catches on the far left .... easy math!

Proof positive of reincarnation
I am sure I sent that B to skunk heaven last year after she tried burrowing into the pheasant pens.

A skunk is easily skinned with no problem of stink by skinning them underwater. Remove the scent glands and keep them to 'share' with your favorite people. The glands are removed underwater and put into a container while underwater to avoid the stink.. The glands are excellent for a fox trapping lure. Foxes like to roll around in the stink.
Too bad you couldn't catch the skunks ,have them de-scented, and returned to the location. They are so good at controlling rodents and insects.
As a pet they are actually more affectionate and cleaner than a cat.

That's not a skunk...
That's your buddy dressed up as a skunk, crawling into a fridge box.

Someone patented a Butt-Out for skunks, but the company quickly folded.

Skunks need to lift their tail in order to spray - The muscle needs to be stretched. In order to trap them without it spraying you need a trap where they cannot lift their tail.

Wouldn't a small trap cause them psychological harm, which in turn would be detrimental to the process of teaching them to be confident swimmers?

The Animal Control guy told me that skunks will spray when they get frightened, they don't see you when their in this trap so they don't spray. He also said they don't necessarily have to lift their tail, they can spray down. Of the nine I caught over the past 6 weeks, one had squirted a bit in the trap, it actually left a bright yellow stain in the plastic. Still stinks, maybe that's what brings in the family members for closer look & a sniff before the door hits them in the arss. When I release them, I put the trap in the shade in heavy grass next to the bush line, it takes them a few minutes to make a dash for the trees, none have sprayed, perhaps they're happy to be free again.
