Well, I always enjoyed my .308, and then went to a 7-08.....but am looking forward to using my new .300 this season, just to see. And yes, it is a bit more ignorant in the recoil department, but kinda fun too......

What's a ballisticsts? Did you mean ballistician or is this some new Ebonics thing?
The .300 is fine, but for the recoil a .338 will always be better. Sorry Abe, but the truth hurts.

My conundrum was that owning a 30-06 puts me very close to the .300 WM.
A .338 WM was purchased, and I never looked back.
.338 WM is the way to go.

Yes, the 300 is a pretty good all-round cartridge. Especially with a nice heavy barrel and a muzzle brake. Great precision/repeatability, sufficient punch for medium range whitetail/black bear and close range elk/moose.
Been thinking about what cartridge & rifle would be good to fill the slot between it and a coyote rifle, but just can't find any justification. Something like a 280AI is close to a 7mm which is close to the 300, so they're essentially less capable duplicates. Something like a 6.5x284 would end up getting rebarrelled every year, and a 6.5 Creedmore would be pointless. Less punch at distance with the same trajectory as the 300. Just a solution for those who are scared of a brake. A 30-30 is an obsolete toy and 45-70 is a relic. Larger calibers are sufficiently covered in the other direction.
Life is tough when you really have all the tools that you need

I have a 30.06 between my 22-250 and my 300WM. I use a 165gr pill in the .06 for deer and 180gr in the 300WM for moose. It works for me but what do I know?

Still can't quite figure out what a .30 cal anything is good for, I started on 7mm, then up to .338, and I just can't think of a use for anything in between.
I thought about a .30 this year, then bought a .40.

Yeah, briefly started looking in the .40 direction too, but practically speaking couldn't find too much real requirement for it for myself. A .416 Wby or Barret, or .458 (for shorter ranges) or .408 Chey-tac (for longer range) could be interesting. There seems to be significant differences in the intended range which each is intended for.
Having hefted around a few 50BMG rifles set into hunting stocks, that would be a non-starter unless heavier balanced stocks were used with a decent tripod. Maybe for shooting cars down at the local scrap metal dealer's, dunno.
Hmm, a crossbow maybe...?

You lost me here. I agree with most of your thinking but you must be thinking different for this statement. I would not hesitate to shoot moose and elk to 500 yards with a 300. Not just any scope or bullet though. And a ton of practice out to 800 or so. Power wise I think it will work.

Ah ha ...... R I G H T Abe ................ It never fails to amaze me how the BESTESTESTESTEST cartridges in the world ... 223, 308, 7.62x39, 30-30, 30-06 and 300 Winchester, miraculously seem to coincide with all of the free brass that people can pick up at the range and all the cheep used guns one can find in all the hidey-hole-maw-and-paw gun shops. Funny how that happens to work hah? he he he he he

Doesn't hurt me...I've owned a 338 for close to 30 years. First rifle in the truck on moose or bear trips. 225 Hornady's have never let me down.

Well Putz... There may be so much brass because they ARE POPULAR. And if you recall, I got all of my brass from YOU in the form of loaded ammo. Come to think of it I got my first 300 Win from YOU too. Maybe you shoulda talked me out of it.
I also remember bringing in an action, bbl and reamer one year over Christmas holidays to do a 280 AI before it was popular, but Youuuuuuuu didn't like doing wildcats, so we (read you) created a 7 STW from bits an pcs that is kinda fun too. Go build something an quit buggin good folks on here.....

300 Win Mag - not in my world. I would prefer the tried and true 30-06 for a host of reasons.
Fortunately, you can have your choice and I can have mine.

If you can't handle or shoot one well, then just say so. Maybe one day you will be able to, and then you can get the "I can't shoot" t-shirt the rest of us wear.

Yip, a gentleman once told me (Coffee Cup Don for those of you that were privileged to know him), that 7 Rem Mag is straight and level for 300 yards...and then it starts to rise a bit......

Who needs the recoil?
Tell me about one species of big game killed by a 300 Mag of any sort that hasn't been killed a hundred times by a 30-06 and/or 270. Sooner or later the heavier recoil will get to everyone and accuracy will suffer due to flinching. 300's and 338's - been there, done that and don't need it anymore.

The best cartridge in the world is the one you can handle and shoot the best. For me I like the .270, 7mm's and the .30's. I favor the .270 and the .06 but that's my preference for all around hunting. For others they might like something bigger or smaller, good for you.
