Default Past legal shooting time

You ever know somebody to get a fine shooting ten min after legal shooting time? What was it? Jokes aside. Man I passed on a a real nice buck tonight that was croaking in. Ten point at least. Neck shot easy but I passed because rules is rules but man. I’m real hesitant to take any shot now unless it’s the shot. Not done yet.

Yes I do know someone that was charged and convicted.
I would not take the chance but I also know many that do.

One question could be why were you still hunting 10 min after legal hunting.

I sit and glass well after the magic tic of the clock.
Often not leaving my stand till it’s dark as it can be, so as not to spook everything outta the area. It’s also is neat to observe what’s hanging out in an area too.

This. I don’t want to spook anything. I don’t move till dark is dark. If animals see a man leaving and entering then you won’t see animals for much longer.

Same reason someone would be “hunting” before legal shooting light. Do you not hike in while it’s still dark to get into position or do you just ride the drivers seat of your truck until it’s light out

I don't even like to take a shot after the magic sunset let alone the 1/2hr after. If sunset is 4;30 that is usually it for me. Unless it's a super bright sky and snow on the ground . I don't like trying to locate animals in the dark . I have enough trouble seeing them in broad daylight when they are down in the bush sometimes.

In on black and out in the black......not hunting either setting up or heading to the hot meal on the table.

I never leave my blinds until it's totally dark, especially if there are deer in the field, for fear of getting busted.

Many of us hunt further than ten feet from our vehicles.

A guy that hunts my same area shot a buck. single lung shot that nicked the liver. He shot it at last light. found it with his headlamp and it was still struggling to breathe but didnt get up and run.........yet. so he had to shoot it again and killed it. i cringed inside at the idea of shooting after last light. but not sure what i would have done in that situation. what would you have done?

Agree. No way am I sticking a knife in a struggling animal. Sounds like a good way to get busted up and hurt. A dilemma for sure to shoot after last light on a wounded animal, hasn't happened to me so I can't say what I'd do.

Watched my Dad do it a few times once on a moose. That was a bit hairy!! but he used to work kill floor so he is pretty handy with a knife. I have had to do it a couple times on deer (with permission) that were hit by vehicles.

Never been in the situation in Alberta, so never thought about it, but here in the UK, for welfare, deer can be shot out of season, out of legal light etc, I had always guessed it would be the same with you, but obviously not.

What would F&W say if they heard that shot after legal, but on closer inspection it had the first shot, that as they hadn't heard, was clearly during legal light? Presumably a knife is just as illegal as it is the killing that is the illegal act.....

It’s the firearm discharge that’ll get you in trouble.

I think charges are pretty discretionary on the investigating officers part.

Every bit of this hyper vigilante looking over the shoulder pontificating isn’t going to put any of this to rest.

The ya but, and what if’s will end up with us circling bowl for sure.

We all know the law, and if you want to live on the edge, the results are inevitable.

Regs don't say anything about the walk out distance. Just the legal shooting hours.

Maybe he was waiting for his buddy to pick him up, enjoy the view or whatever.

What happened?

I’ve done it a once....in daylight though, and using an arrow. Worked fine. Guess I could have shot it, but didn’t want to risk blowing up an arrow shooting something that close.

Also wrassled a well hit dying buck off the edge of a steep coulee by the antlers. That seemed like a good idea at the time for some reason. Not gonna recommend it, but I didn’t get hurt.

Yes I know a guy that lost his licence for a year for shooting an elk shortly after legal light in an area with a real stickler of a neighbour. A lot of people get away with it though it seems. It surprises me how many big buck stories I hear where "well maybe it was a bit early'' or "maybe it was a bit late."

It can be toughest to say no I find when your west of an animal to the east as legal light rolls over. Sometimes the light conditions in those situations are good enough it seems silly that you have to give it up but them are the breaks.

Jeez you think the hunting hours are bad. Try hunting on the border. Passed up a nice 170 class whitetail that was 100 yards in the wrong province! Could I have shot him and retrieved him without anyone noticing, probably. Is it worth losing hunting privileges, no. Rules are rules and there will always be the handful that like to bend them.

I've discharged my muzzle-loader after dark during inclement weather, because I wanted a fresh charge first thing in the morning. I wondered if someone may have heard it and reported it, or just cursed assuming I was hunting after legal time.
