I have owned alot of firearms. Maybe not as many as alot of people, but a fair share. And I really like the .270 winchester. I have owned 3 of them but do not currently have one.

I tried something new in that gap and went with the .270 wsm, and it brings a smile to my face every time I pull the trigger.

I also like the .338 Win Mag.....if I ever only wanted two big game rifles, the .270 WSM and .338WM would be all I bought.

I agree!

My Savage .270 WSM drops game with authority, and is deadly accurate. I have many rifles, but it is my go to gun. If I really want to hit something hard, the Tikka .338 comes out.

That being said, I carried my .338 for moose all this fall. I had nothing but bad luck. Just couldn't close the deal. I dropped my .338 (not hard enough to affect the scope, as it turned out) so I took out my .270 WSM with 140 gr TSX handloads. I dropped my moose that morning with one shot. It didnt take a step.

I love that gun!

Yup, I think more people fuss to much about what cartridge they are going to shoot and not enough about what they are shooting it in.
Choose you favorite rifle and then look around for a cartridge - dange4d near most of the big game cartridges will be fine for antelope to moose, some a bit better than others, but none any more perfect for everything than another.

I have a little over sixty cartridges in my cartridge collection.
At least a quarter of them would fit into the "Best all around" catigory.

Best all around depends on a number of factors. Intended target, availability of ammo, intended range, intended enviournemnt, wieght of the hunter, skill of the hunter, tollerance to pain of the hunter, budget, and more.

Bottom line, there is no best all around gun for all. Only a best all around for each individual.

We can make recomendations, but most of them will be useless to you because only you know all the requirments. Or maybe not.

One thing is sure. No one else can know what is best for you.

Sorry, but it's a path only you can follow.

270 WIN, or if you can handle the recoil 300 WTH.

I only own these two calibers. The 300 reaches out with plenty of energy to do the job at 400yds+.I think the 270 gives cleaner kills at under 300yds though.

Just my experience anyway. If I could only have one of them it would probably be the 270.

Default Perhaps favorite cartridge is a better question than best.

I have always been a 270 win guy, but the last few years have been doing my killing with a 7 x57 Ruger #1 with a 158 gr Norma bonded bullet. Hard to argue with the performance.

I wonder what my next favorite will be ?

probably the best post.
that being said, if you are average size with an average budget, shooting under average circumstances, with average skill, average tolerance to pain, and shoot average animals, then id say your average 30-06 or 270......lol,
like keg said, certian guns arnt for everyone.

There is no best all around caliber, so there certainly is no best all around cartridge. Any bullet diameter starting at around .264" on up would be more than sufficient for any game in Alberta, if the bullet is of suitable construction, and the impact velocity is enough to allow the bullet to expand properly. Some people even use bullet diameters as small as .243" to hunt elk and moose.

Been hunting and shooting with the 7X57 for the last few years and I don't believe a better deer cartridge has been made. I have not tried it on the larger beasts but from what i have seen there would be no issues.

Having said that I sold my last two 30-06s a couple of years ago and suffered major withdrawal. Picked up an 85 in 06 and my world seems complete again. I just can't live without one in the safe.

Hard to go wrong with a 30-06 I have Browning BAR that I got from my father. It dates back to the 60s and it still killed a couple of deer last fall , it is still my go to gun if I need to kill some game. Having said that I just had a 6.5x 55 improved built. I was just working up a load this afternoon and ended up with a 130 gr VLD or 130 AB running at 3000 fps and shooting .6 inch groups at 100yds. If you look at the 130 6.5 running at 3000 fps you will see that it out preforms a 270 win. But does any of that matter much, I think not.
Most game you shoot will not know the difference on what caliber you shoot as long as you are reasonable about it. Having a fancy gun with a custom wild cat cartridge is more about the camp fire part of the hunt than about the killing game part.

Default 300 win mag

I had a 300 win mag with the 24 inch barrel with DM. sold it to buy a 7mm worst thing i have done in my life. i would take the 300 wm over any caliber.
Both calibers hit hard but something about the 30 cal lead i love. once again as stated before no perfect caliber but the 300 win mag gets my vote.

OP:

There is nothing wrong with your .303 for bear. Matter of fact It will work as well as anything else out there. I do most of my hunting with a a 7mm-08 (used to use a .270 and a .303). You'll find that pretty well any 25-06/260/6.5x55/6.5mag/270/270wsm/270wby/7x57/7mm-08/280/308/30-06 or whatever will make any real difference. Like Cat said, it's more about having a rifle that fits you, and a recoil level that you're comfortable shooting.

Default .270

I have a great .270 and it has taken down almost everything in Alberta.
Shoots flat and accurate and haven't found a problem with wind.
130 and 150

Yup, if all those things are correct, there is a far better chance that you will ENJOY shooting the rifle, and that makes a big difference.
If a person does not enjoy a rifle they are shooting , generally speaking, they
A: will not shoot it as much , and
B: they won;t shoot it as well as one that fits, has a recoil level they can handle, and is pleasing to their eye.

The amount that a bullet is effected by wind varies with the wind speed and direction, the shot distance, the BC of the bullet, and the velocity, but wind does effect all bullets to some extent. When the shot distance reaches 300 or 400 yards, it doesn't take much wind to significantly effect the point of impact.

any alberta gunsafe should have:

a 22
12 guage
30-06.

a better one:
a 22
12 guage
20 guage
22-250
3006

or yet:
a 17hmr (or mag22)
a 22
12 and 20 guage
22-250 or 204
2506 to 7mm mag
300mag or 338

its about creating anough spread in the arsenal...having a 260, 270,and 280. they are basically all the same cartridge. as much as i consider a 3006 or 270 to be the 'vanilla ice cream' in the cartridge world they are enough for 99% of situations.

the best all around means to hunt everything you can with 1 rifle. And the only caliber that earn this award for decade is the 375 H&H.

Now if you mean the best all around caliber for North America.. The 338 Win mag is. Not far behind a certain 300 win mag.

imo.

Recoil on the 338wm is a little more tolerable than the 300wm, I have 2 big game rifles, a 270wsm & a 338wm, the 338 has been sitting dormant for a few years but is coming back out, our range is getting extended to 1200m.

The N.A. 29 has been taken with an '06 and it was done many years ago with a low power scope to boot.
recoil can be a factor and the 338 has its share of that.
Myself, I haven;'t had a big magnum in my vault that got shot for many years, and have no qualms about going after anything that is in there with any of my hunting rifles even though they do not have what many would consider great knockdown power.
The most power rifles I have are a ruger single shot in .303 Brit and a .280, but I don't hunt with the .280.
