I already have it; Mosin-Nagant in 7.62x54mmR.

The Russian .30-06

It'll kill anything on legs, and Mosins never break. Perfect.

I could live with many of the rifles on the market in any cartridge, as long as the rifle was reliable.
Some that come to mind would be any Enfield, any Ruger, danged near any Remington or Winchester, most of the Savage line up, Tikka Sako, etc, etc.
if I had to actually narrow it down to a stone cold reliable , never fail, take a fall in the creek and shoot it type of rifle there is only one I would take - the Enfield, doesn't matter the model, gimme an SMLE , No.4, No.5, just doesn't matter, as long as it is at least as accurate as Jimbo1's!

[QUOTE=SonnyJ;1227522]I've been hunting with this old winchester model 70 - 30-06 since 1976.

I never had a moment where I thought I needed something else.

X2- Have been using mine since '91 even with a full cabinet.

Great 1000th post!!!

I take it that there are no votes for 30-06 because with the different weights in grains, you have to re sight with every different load?

I have ordered a 22-250 for Coyotes, but I also have a weatherby 300 win mag, that I got from my father. It will be my first gun for larger game and I am concerned that it may be too much gun for me to start with. I have read quite a bit online about it (I also dont believe everything I read online) but wanna make sure that I dont have too much gun for what I am doing.

I am 32 years old, 6'1" and over 200 lbs.

Should I be worried or just get a limbsaver for the 300 and suck it up.
the biggest problem with heavy recoil guns is that the shooters don't realize that it does not fit them properly, with your size and if you don't have any injurys the recoil shuold be no problem but a gun that fit your father may not fit you, lenght of stock, amount of drop in stock, all factor in to felt recoil as some times you here of 7-08 kicking worse than an 06 witch is basicaly impossible but if that 7-08 does not fit decently you realy get to feel the recoil.

My NEW favorite is the T3 Tikka 300 win mag . I take it coyote calling when there is another guy with me , he uses the 22-250 and I reach out for the long shots in the wind .. Recoil shouldn't be a problem for you , install a limbsaver like I did and enjoy .At first I couldn't keep target in the scope when I pulled the trigger but now after some practice , I see everything go down in the scope .

Tikka T3 in 6.5x55 does all job for me. Deer up to 700 yds, sheep, moose, coyote, grouse... just use right bullet.

Thanks for the help guys. I know that if I ask 100 people, I will get 100 different reasons for their choices. It is all personal preference.

I am bad for spending money on things that I want, and not things that I necessarily need.

Just want to be confident that if I rig up the 300WM that I will be able to fit it for myself.

Caliber wise I would say either the 300 win mag or the 270 wsm.
Gun wise I would say either a sako or a sako!!

For readily available, cheap(er) ammo I would stick with either a .270 or .30/06

My own personal one gun would be a 7-08, simply because I have to luxury of reloading my own shells. This brings down the cost and gives me a tremendous range of premium bullets to load with. Even though I live in a city of 60,000 I can only buy one or two factory offerings for it.

270 win more than capable for alberta, ammo avaiblity, low recoil, and most shoot quite well right out of the box, that last one is a big plus. BUT what ever you get make sure that it fits you. there like work boots poor fit is not enjoyable

This is what I shoot too! My first rifle was a 300wsm! Way too much recoil for a newbie! Rifle never felt comfortable either! Now I shoot s cheap savage 11fcxp3 in .308, and it fits me perfect and has very little felt recoil! If you want cheap ammo, and something you can buy factory loads for virtually every where, get a .308!

Controlled feed action - Husqvarna, Winchester 70 Featherweight in 30-06

Thank goodness I don't have to make this choice. I would have to sell a flock of rifles.

There's no game in Alberta I wouldn't feel comfortable taking with my .30-06 with 165 grain Interbonds; who says you need to have more varying loads to find utility with a .30-06 but not with a .270 Win?

You might find that anything with an action that positively secures the cartridge for feeding or extraction might have advantages in the field (controlled round feed), and I like a rifle where the bolt can be locked down by the safety; saves it from being opened by a branch, etc when bushwhacking.

For that, if It was for me I would seriously consider a 243, if a moose is a possibility, a 7mm08 , or a 270 .
You will never go wrong with a 308 or 30-06 either, but personaly I prefer a 243,270, 7mm-08 over a 30 cal for deer.

Default One Gun

One gun. I love my Savage 110 30-06. A wide variety of grain size, ammo (well priced) available everywhere, and good for all game in AB. The whole song and dance about resighting with grain change is overdone. I have shot 150/165/180 without any resighting. However, I generally am not shooting over 300 yards.

And I have seen a difference in change of impact of over 3" at 100 yards, just by changing the type of bullet, even though the weight was the same. You don't know what possible difference there might be until you shoot the various loads in your gun, and see the difference for yourself.
