Default norinco sxs 12ga problem need advice

So the trouble be that it wont lock shut, the barrel release lever goes sideways when i close the action but it wont latch. It started when i shot it and it wouldnt open without a considerable amount of effort. So once i got er open i tried it with both barrels empty and it seemed to function fine then i put the empties back in and closed the action and again had a hard time opening thr action and when i finally got it open the shells were jammed in the barrel and the ejector was stuck. Once i knocked the empty shells back out the action will no longer lock closed. Has anyone had a similar problem and be able so suggest a possible remedy. Im guessing its something fairly simple but i dont want to go messing with it before i at least ask some advice. Its a norinco sxs hammer double coach gun
Thanks

Could it be something easier and over looked like 3" shells in a 2 3/4" chamber?

Is this a new gun?

If so, check it for burrs and machining defects. Also check the springs.

I had the same problem on a savage 24. You will need to remove the stock by removing the butt pad and unscrewing the slotted screw with a long screw driver. I assume you have already done that. If it is the same, There is a screw at the bottom side of the take down Lever. It threads straight into the bottom end of it. This screw had come loose. Just find a clever way too tighten it as I recall it is slotted on the savage 24. I used needle nose vice grips. I suppose you could also remove the trigger group but I didn't.
Re-reading the op, it sounds like you may have forced it open. Hopefully nothing was bent if you did. It is easy to open one after you get the butt stock off. There are YouTube videos on how to disassemble one btw.

That would not cause a closing problem as a 3" shell will drop right into a 2 3/4" chamber!

I think i got it figured. There was a burr on the barrell side that the lug grabs. I probably put it there trying to get the stuck shells out. Its acting a bit different than before but it does lock closed now so ill maybe check that screw larryg mentioned. I found out later that i was shooting someone elses handloads, could a bad one have been the cause of my troubles. Ive never looked into shotgun reloading so i do not know anything on the subject.

Glad you figured it out but maybe check the latch anyway like you said.
A WORD OF CAUTION about using someone else's
Handloads !!
Unless you know what the loads are( written on the box by the loader )
And know how strong your gun is, DO NOT USE THEM!!
I have seen guns break because someone loaded ammo that was far too over pressure.
One was a perfectly good model 11, another was an 870, and another was a Zabala SXS.
Two of the guns fired ammo that was supposedly loaded by "experts" but when we pulled a few rounds apart it became obvious that there was far too much powder and shot !
These were called" magnum" loads but we're in fact far heavier than was safe!!
