Default What is the second best cartridge of all time?

Of course the number one spot being held by the 30/06, after that, what is the best cartridge for putting meat on the table here in North America. 270?

By best do you mean most popular? And if you do mean most popular do you mean historically, or today? If historically, in Canada, I'd say .303. If today I'd say .270, though I'm not sure I'd bet the house on it. 7mm, .308, and .300wm could all be close.

The 300 magnum is the official runner up to the best cartridge of all time, the .280 rem of course.

According to some random gentleman yesterday (or old creepy guy) the Weatherby 260 is the best round of all time and always will be.

Hard to argue with the .22. Other than shotguns, it's probably put more grouse, rabbit, squirrel on the table as anything. By Children no less!

Historically I would agree with the 30-30 or the .303 (in Canada). Today it seems this new breed of deer needs nothing less than an uber-mag. Two years ago I butchered a wt doe that dressed out at barely a 100# (probably closer to 90) for my neighbour's friend. He got her at about 70 yards with his '300 hunnert winnie'. The entry hole just aft of the foreleg was a neat little pucker. The exit wound split four ribs and destroyed half the shoulder. The shot was spot on, but only because he sighted in at 100yds. He'd never shot it farther than that.

Oh well, at least I got some beer and a nice tender roast out of the deal.

Colin.

Default best caliber

Some guys will put their life on the 30 30 or 303 and their both great, the best caliber is the one you believe in and second best is the one you lend to your friend.

I'd have to say the best most reliable, trustworthy and predictable has got to be the 308 win. Just my two cents.

meh ....270 is just a the 06 necked down .....still applies i suppose ...... but the 7mm rem mag sure seems popular here .... ive never shot one yet but theres always one at the range

for meat on the table ....... sorry but unless your eating magpies and gophers the 22 LR doesnt include in the ops question ..... but is just simply a necessity ...... like its above the law in regards to any other calibre ownership questions ....everyone should own 2 (at least) or 6 of them(joking)

3006/308 id say tied for first ( the 308 is more efficient but the 06 can handle the bigger bullets ) and yeah 270 in there as well

then 7mm RM /300 win mag for second ...one of those is my choice ...tied again i guess .....
at least from what ive seen

.22LR is #1, then whatever you fancy is #2.
Personally, I'd put .22WMR in 2d place.

Best answere yet, I usually lend out my 30-06 and use my .270 though.

I guess the best way to answere the question would be to ask yourself which rifles would you own if you could only have to. For me it would be my .270 and my .22. If I could only own 2 GUNS however I'd trade the .22 for a 12 gauge.

Default all time best

#1-- 30-06 versatile; good for anything in North America
#2-- .375 Widely available; good for anything in the world

But, just to be different, I use the .358 norma (slight edge in power and trajectory on the '06), and the 9.3x62 (doesn't seem like quite as much "overkill" for game here in North America)

30-30, kills anything, cheap, common, quick to react and fits nicely in a truck just about anywhere.

Has more animal blood to it's name than most any other cartridge as well.
