Default When do they stock ponds

Just curious when they stick in the spring Specifically McLean pond. Is there a site that says when they plan to or Is it just word of mouth.

If you look at past stocking reports here you can ballpark a date for the water you're interested in.

The 2017 link will also be updated through the year as the fish are stocked

Along with the AEP stocking reports, ACA also stocks ponds/lakes around Alberta that may not be listed in AEP fish stocking lists. This link will take you to their page, it shows you their target month for 2017 and if it has been stocked (currently, all of which have not, to my disappointment). I'm checking it very frequently, as the ponds around me are usually stocked and biting before now, and there aren't many fishing options around me (must be something to do with whirlings confirmed in trout hatcheries). Good Luck!

Does it really matter what day they stock it? I'm assuming the question is based on curiosity and not necessity. Some of the best fishing on these lakes will as the ice goes and immediately after. Another quirk I've noticed is the bite tails off pretty hard immediately after a stocking.

Default Fish

Some stocking in the Calgary region has already begun. Not sure if the link will work for all.

Some lakes are fished out and there are no fish to catch at ice out because they were all taken the season before.

some lakes/ponds are stocked twice in may which makes me wonder WHY????? because of the heavy angling pressure they get fished out fast. i would like to see them stock lakes/ponds once in spring and once in the fall like other provinces. then there will be some fish left for winter season.

I think the fall stocking is not often done in AB due to high risk for winter kill at some lakes. Plus more cost to feed the fish over the several months of summer when they could independently be getting fat in the lakes over summer. Also then additional stocking costs second go round.

I think a more reasonable option to extend the length of stocked fish in the lake would be to have variable limits throughout the province depending on the lake. Like in BC some trout lakes in the cities have a limit of 2 fish, while some with less access and less pressure have limits of 5. Some ponds are managed for larger fish and have limits of two as well.

Alberta is not great at managing fisheries though... kind of lazy about the whole individual lake rules and all their attention and resources goes to a fish... the Walleye, which we can't even keep most of the time anyways. I think it would be pretty easy to go through the list of stocked lakes and just put a two fish limit on all the high pressure, near town or in town lakes. That would help solve some of the problem of rapidly vanishing fish.

That was a great video by the way. High speed trout raceway.

If it doesn't winter kill it's not fished out. However if guys are content to follow the stocking truck around give'r.

Two fish limit for sure. Put and take is fine but never could see the attraction of whacking the little fresh stockers like there's no tomorrow and yes the fishing for the real trout is brutal when restocked with hatchery dumbies. But maybe that's a good thing. You'll see that big one again in august.

Default Eggs

Some lakes will not get any stock this year as one of the major egg suppliers had a catastrophic failure this year.

That video was 2500 rainbows and 600 browns.

Here's an update from the My Wild Alberta facebook page. "Fish stocking has been delayed due to inclement weather. The following list of stocked lakes is accurate as of Friday, April 21."
