Default 22

One of the most solid makes is the cz. At least for the price range you are looking. May have to go second hand for this range, but the 452 and it's off-spring are accurate and well made.

In addition the the previously mentioned CZ and Savage rifles, you could also look at Tikka.

Not under $600 as the OP stipulated you can't, and definitely not if you prefer wood and metal to plastic.

You should be able to get into a CZ for very close to that. I have owned Savage as well, I would take the CZ hands down, not even tempted in the Savage.

Truth is you can find one for a bit over $600, and I'm just trying to offer a quality suggestion.

Default Rifle

Looking for a chassis or traditional stock? My MkII and B22 are fantastic to me.

I have owned pretty much every make of 22RF made. I do have a preference for the nicer built ones but when it comes to informal target shooting and wacking gophers, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Savage. I have owned half a dozen over the years and every single one was a great shooter, functioned well and went on to other homes where they are still giving quality service. Another one on the more inexpensive side are Marlin Rimfires. I have owned a couple of those in 22 RF and 17 HMR. Nice guns for the price and very accurate. When you figure you can get one of these 2 for about $300, add a scope and still be well under budget, pretty hard to argue they aren't a great choice.
