2018 Bear Pic and Harvest Thread
All this talk about baiting has really got me missing the action. I'm not baiting this year as family life is too hectic. I would love to see some pictures of the Bears you guys have coming in and or killed. There hasn't been much posted on this so I figured I would start this thread.
Good luck, be safe and happy hunting! The moose calves will thank you!

Passed this Boar on my way home last night, about 20 minutes south of Athabasca. Sat and watched him for a few minutes, until the wife got antsy.

Throw up a pic of that thing, never seen such a bear! We had one sow that was a regular for several years that had a big bald patch on her side. She came in as a cub and had it right from year one. Had to have been at least 16-18” almost perfectly bald circle. I wish I still had pics, but I delete them off the comp after a year or 2 unless it’s a target bear.
We put up one new bait because we couldn’t get into the regulars, it’s getting hit and we’re going to keep it going with another member here and his kids. Finally made it into the regular spots on Tuesday so will See what the weekend brings when we go for a check.

Mite cause of this condition
Kenmore....This condition is almost certainly caused by a mite. Genus is Ursicoptes. Has broad distribution in black bears. I have seen this condition in BC and AB

That’s crazy, never seen that before to the best as I can remember. Is it a permanent thing?

Seen a real corker this evening,in fact, can't even swear 100% that it wasn't a grizzly from 1500yds with 10x binos? On the other hand, back in October in the exact same field within 200yards where this one was I watched a real hog of a blackie that was 500lbs if he was an ounce while I was elk hunting,so it could very well been him,but from this distance tonite he looked quite grizzly like?Im thinkin it was probly that big black all emaciated from winter and appeared to be long legged with big shoulders, long neck and a big punkin?
Either way,I had neither the ambition to put a stalk on him nor the time to deal with it if I got him, starting my 21/7 hitch in the mornin. 😖
Maybe I can catch up to him end of the month?

Some bald faced bears get it from frost bite in the den. I believe they call them monkey faced bears.

Be very careful handling those bears with the bald faces, or worse balding all over. Personally I would put them out of their misery but I wouldn't touch one, same as I won't touch mangy yotes. The mites that cause mange on bears and yotes don't live long on people long but the mange itself can be very contagious at certain stages. It will; show up as itchy scabs that usually go away after 10-14 days and do not recur.

Got one
I took my boss and his youngest son into my bait yesterday.
The two of them only sat an hour and their first bear came in. The bear spooked soon after being in the bait, it seemed alarmed by something in the ravine which the bait sits above(stand is farther from the ravine)
On the bears first trip in they were mulling over whether to take it or not when it spooked. A couple hours later the same bear dashed in and dashed out, again preoccupied with the ravine. On the bears third trip into the bait, the young lad laid into the young boar with his .270Win, and put a 150gr Corelockt, into the near side shoulder dropping the bear on the spot. First sit, first bear, and happy as can be.
Sorry about the black out of the lads face but he can’t be found at this moment to ask his permission to post his pic.

Seen two separate Cubs, second and third yr. One by himself and other with a sow suntanning in the polar tree tops on the banks of the Athabasca Sunday. Kilometres apart. Don’t see that every
day.

My weekend ended with 4 bears coming into the bait but all got the pass. A curious muledeer ventured around us as well which I thought was strange. Hopefully try to get back a few more times.
