Cool

Sorry, watch both more than other mainstream media except maybe mat geo and discovery. Wierd how" state" is anti gov . I like that idea. is it free market if theres only 5 players. Realistically speaking the best shows on tv appear on both imo . I hope the masses never get to pick what we watch based on viewer ship. Only hippies care abought this little rock in the vast empty vacume of 13 billion yrs of nothing . Long live the cbc and pbs . Voices in the wilderness of mostly poop. Television was intended as a medium for education instead it sells crap to the sheep. Imo.

Every time I tune into CBC Radio it seems like a constant stream of interviews with self-styled 'victims'. Apparently somebody insulted them, or looked at them funny, or they've been discriminated against, while the interviewer plays grief counsellor. Usually, the evil offender is identified that ends up being white, middle aged, middle income, male, (me ), or 'Harpers government' or an evil corporation.

I've got about as much time for Victim Radio as I have for trying to decipher fish gunners' posts....

The sooner all tax-payer funding is cut, the better.

Hey, if you want to watch the CBC and PBS I fully support your right to do so....on your dime, not mine.

I really enjoy the righteous indignation of the entitlement crowd when the working Joe's tell them they might have to start paying for their propagandist sermons from the mother corp.

Education!! Ha. If you think the droning of Peter Mansbridge against Harper or reruns of Coronation Street are educational...

^^^This. Cut the gov't funding and let the masses that support it, well support it. With your money, not mine.

Whoo again ,The Ao guru ' s falling way off the reality of the general public . This is just Wikipedia so in no way fact just a position that supports my thoughts . Of course in the AO world has no accuracy.
"Since the 1970s, the CBC has not maintained the dominance in broadcasting it formerly had,[according to whom?]*but it still plays an important role. The CBC’s cultural influence, like that of many public broadcasters, has waned in recent decades. This is partly due to severe budget cuts by the Canadian federal government, which began in the late 1980s and levelled off in the late 1990s. It is also due to industry-wide fragmentation of television audiences (the decline of network television generally, due to the rise in specialty channel viewership, as well as the increase of non-television entertainment options such as video games, the Internet, etc.). Private networks in Canada face the same competition, but their viewership is declining more slowly than CBC Television’s.In English-speaking Canada, the decline in CBC viewership can be partly attributed to popularity of private television networks' rebroadcast of American programming with substituted Canadian advertising. American programs appear to attract higher audiences than do much of the made-in-Canada programming that is a CBC specialty.Viewership on the CBC’s French television network has also declined, mostly because of stiff competition from private French-language networks. Audience fragmentation is another issue. However, in contrast to the anglophone audience,*French Canadiansprefer home-grown television programming, a vibrant*Quebec*star system is in place, and little American or foreign content airs on French-language networks, public or private. And the CBC’s French-language*radiochannel is sometimes the top-rated*network.In the case of breaking news, includingfederal elections, CBC Television may obtain the largest number of viewers. For instance, after*election night 2006, CBC Television took out full-page newspaper ads claiming that 2.2 million Canadians watched their coverage, more than any other broadcaster. However, in similar ads, CTV also claimed to be number one, stating there was a CBC audience of only 1.2 million. In both cases, the methodologies were not clear from the ads, such as time periods and whether simulcasts on one or both of the networks’ news channels (Newsworld for CBC,*Newsnet*for CTV) were counted. The CBC was the only television network broadcasting in Canada until the creation of ITO, a short-lived predecessor of today’s*CTV, in 1960; even then, large parts of Canada did not receive CTV service until the late 1960s or early 1970s. The CBC also had the only national radio network. Its cultural impact was therefore significant since many Canadians had little or no choice for their information and entertainment other than from these two powerful media outlets.Even after the introduction of commercial television and radio, the CBC has remained one of the main elements in Canadian popular culture through its obligation to produce Canadian television and radio programming. The CBC has made programs for mass audiences and for smaller audiences interested in drama, performance arts, documentaries, current affairs, entertainment and sport. The 1950s saw the CBC providing hands-on training and employment for actors, writers, and directors in the developing field of its television dramatic services, and later saw much of the talent heading south to seek fame and fortune in New York and Hollywood.Competition from private broadcasters likeCTV,*Global, and other broadcast television stations and specialty channels has lessened the CBC’s reach, but nevertheless it remains a major influence on Canadian popular culture. According to the corporation’s research, 92% of Canadians consider the CBC an essential service."
Whoo thats a big quote sorry I try not to do this but as my lacking in grammer is under scrutiny. Some one elses words work better than mine.

So the gov't funded CBC's research claims 92% of Canadians see the CBC as an essential service.

If that is the case why the need for tax payer dollars, the CBC should be able to support themselves with that kind of viewership.

Schools fall under provincial jurisdiction, Air Canada and CN Rail are privately owned companies.

Gov't has no place competing with the private sector.

Yes kill them... I want all of my news and information to come from the same people that own and control the governments trying to kill publicly owned broadcasting.... foreign owed corporations.

Yup... we can trust them.... out of town money is our friend and they would never guide us towards something that is a better deal for them than Canadians.

Lets get at it and drive the last nail in the coffin. Lets kill those last and important platforms that free people can use to express their democratic rights without bias.

Then we can take those pennies and spend them where they belong... on the oligarchy.

What joke... people come on here and complain about their tax nickles and dimes being used to fund a PUBLIC voice but seemingly have no issue with fistfuls of tax dollars being used to help profitable corporations pay their employees, lobby and undermine our government and impose their will upon citizens.

Yup...CBC bad.... corporations on the teat...having more control over government and taking control of public expression in what was once a democracy...good.

Some of you guys really to give your heads a shake....open your eyes and see who is behind the big push to kill things like the CBC.

I'll give you a hint.... one of them just ran for public office as a separatist in Quebec which...begs the question..... How many of you Sun Media anti-propaganda warriors cancelled your subscriptions as a result of that?

Now all you have to do is explain to us how funding Sun Media Corp and its owner is a better choice than the CBC which... has been about as neutral politically as any other media outlet in Canada.
I know memories are short but they never gave the Liberals or anyone else a free ride when they were in the hot seat either.

If you do not like it...change the channel... the corporations manufacture news for all tastes.

If CBC is the best thing since sliced bread and the masses like yourself love it so much feel free to pay for it on your dime, not at the expense of every taxpayer in Canada.

And before you slight me on where I hang my hat, I still pay taxes in Alberta and in Canada.

Quebecor receives 3.7 million for French language magazines.

CBC 1.1 billion.

I have a choice whether or not to pay for Sun News channel.

I am forced by law to pay for the CBC.

Are you trying to tell me those companies don't pay tax.

Those companies were once gov't owned and now are private and will live or die on their own their own merit.

Time for the CBC to do the same.

And if we're using Wiki as a source, (who's latest numbers are from 2006) here's what was left out:

"Among its revenue sources for the year ending March 31, 2006, the CBC received $946 million in its annual funding from the federal government, as well as $60 million in "one-time" supplementary funding for programming. However, this supplementary funding has been repeated annually for a number of years. This combined total is just over a billion dollars annually and is a source of heated debate. "

By my math, that's 2 million, 7 hundred and forty thousand dollars a day.

Nobody says kill the CBC. Just make them compete under the same rules as other networks.

If they can't survive, they aren't needed or wanted.

Fine.
Does that mean that I can opt out of paying for corporate welfare and subsides to everything from farms to Suncor?

Cause it it does that sounds like great deal to me...I'll be money ahead.

After all...at least CBC gives me something back in return.... news that isn't vetted by the 1%.

The problem wit5h that is that to survive under the same conditions they have to rely upon all of their funding from the same peole that are controilling the rest of the media.

If we do not maintain public broadcasting funding they might as well just fold altogether.... or change their name to the Koch Brothers Network.

Yup, it should all be dropped. CBC is a good start.

I don't want my money going to the CBC, art galleries, Quebecor, Bombardier, GM, or any of them. It's all just a shell game with the gov't taking it's cut to live a lavish lifestyle on my dime, and it all starts when someone says something like: "I want gov't to do X for me."

And frankly, most of the network news is anything but real journalism anyway. They just parrot what they're told to say by gov't, special interest groups etc. They're all just big advertisements for whoever is willing to step in front of their microphone, as long as what they're saying lines up with the network. Most of the real journalism going on now is being done online.

The CBC is keeping the evil USA at bay? Come on. Even you don't believe that for a second.

Maybe Coronation Street is making us more Canadian against the evil Two and Half Men which would turn us into what? a bunch of duck hunters with camo and beards?

No sorry . No funding from the tax payers coffers . Yes the cbc is keeping a large canadian content. Keeping a canadian bias which would be none existent. Starting to think theres a bunch of folks on AO that would be way better off down south . They dont like our fire arns laws , Gov funded tv or tax paying in general. Green grass for you folks down that way ... lo taxs, buy most any gun ya want , pack em around waiting for some one to shoot lol. Yep wanna change canada for the worst instead of moving to where folks think that way already. Long live the littlest hobbo .lol .

Hmmmm, the CBC brainwashing is what's keeping you so steadfast against freedom.

The Littlest Hobo is a Canadian television series based upon a 1958 American film of the same name directed by Charles R. Rondeau. The series first aired from 1963 to 1965 in syndication, spanning six seasons and was revived for a popular second run on CTV from October 11, 1979 to March 7, 1985. It starred an ownerless dog. Better be careful there gunner..."BASED ON AN AMERICAN film"....AMERICAN....oooooooo, they're gonna get you. AND it was on CTV...not mother corp.

Don't forget to check under your bed tonight....there might be Americans hiding under there....just waiting...waiting for the right time...TO GET YOU!!!

Everyone knows the littlest Hobo was on CTV, are you sure you're Canadian?? Maybe getting too much CBC OR maybe you're a spy....a spy for the AMERICANS!!!!

If we do not maintain public broadcasting funding they might as well just fold altogether.... or change their name to the Koch Brothers Network.

To use your logic, if news is beholden to those that fund it the CBC must be only giving us gov't approved information.
