Pressure treated wood for boxes.
Has anyone had troubles using pressure treated lumber for weasel boxes or boxes for other critters?
Wondering if the smell of them is a deterrent?
I'm getting ready to start making a large amount, and I'd hate to waste time and money.
Thanks?

Bears still like to pound the hell out of them, they do not care if they are made to last through tough weather.

These will be picked up at the end of season, for the most part, so bears shouldn't be a problem.
Just trying to figure out how to make the most quality boxes for the best cost.
Plywood is a good value, but it's hard to properly nail into from the sides.

I use the plastic boxes from Halfords. Drill 2 holes on one side of box. Use a 90 degree battery powered drill to screw to tree. Easy to install and easy to take down. Have had boxes for 8 years and still look like new.

Had a grizz pound the sh-t out of 2 wood boxes so far this season, one end of Nov and other just before Christmas. Agree the Halford plastic boxes are most bear proof, but not cheap.
I pick up all my wood boxes end of season, but then black bear beat the hell out of them when stored on cabin deck last summer. Also grizz likes to nock them off deck of other cabin every Halloween when he does not get any treats. Love those bears.

Bildson had good technique to quick attach boxes, would nail/screw 0ne foot piece of survey stake to lean pole. Then just slide box under stake.

With plastic boxes you can use a wooden shingle screwed or nailed to the tree vertically or running pole and the plastic box just slides right over for a quick set.

Sourdough doug,
Thanks for the tip regarding the air stapler. I've never been around one, and I pretty much thought they were just for fabrac on furniture .
The Metabo one I looked at can pound 1 1/2" staples, so I could use it to put the entire boxes together.
Looks to be handy for a lot of other projects too.
Now to convince the wife it's a "Need", not "want " again ! 😄
Happy trapping,
Ken

I made my weasel boxes out of fence boards. One 1"x6"x6' board makes one weasel box. Instead of putting a hinge on the top board I put one screw in the middle of the back so the top opened by moving it sideways. You need a little wire mesh to cover the hole in the back and it's easily screwed together. NOTE....You should use those green coated screws. The preservative in the wood will eventually eat through zinc screws.

H.D,
Thanks for the excellent diagram. I've got some direction for getting used 1x6's, and if that works out I'll be using your design.
Otherwise I'll sit down and figure out the cost of buying new boards vs plywood and go with the better value.
