Default Sylvan Lake - Ice Report - Updated Dec 09th - Results are In

This morning ….. see!

Scott took this pic of Gull yesterday, he said it looks like the lake is completely frozen over.

Will upload a few more pic's as the lake changes. Last year Sylvan still had open water on November 26, I did a few test drills on December 02nd we had a good 6-7" ice.

Sharpen those hooks fella's ...

Cheers,

David

This for 12-Dec.

yoteblaster, I rounded to the nearest .5 inch. Let's not get too crazy.

2017 Season Opens here this year on Monday December 11th, I'll start;

Zip-in-Z = 8"

Lets see what others think?

For opening weekend,
based on the long term cold temps and not a lot of snow in the forecast, I'm going with 11 inches on Sylvan. That and it hasn't been taken yet

Gull on the other hand is going to be 13 inches. Good ole lucky 13.

The lake ice is developing, think it was -23C here this morning, got another 100 yards or more of clear ice, still have a lot of Canada's here, too. Maybe they know something.

No more pic's for at least a week, spent most of the day working on the Legions Poppy Campaign and preparing for the Remembrance Day ceremony on Saturday.

I mentioned this on the General Section it's applies here too. Hope everyone gets a new fresh Poppy for Remembrance Day, the one's from last year wilt. The Legion, appreciates the donation and your support.

Cheers

David

Short update .... it was cold here with little to no wind last night, drove past the Lake this afternoon, would say 60-70% ice covered. It's starting to look like a skating rink, nice clear ice developing further & further out.

Looking very promising for those members with big numbers!

Nice! Thanks for the update Zip. That is some good progress.

It was cold again in the boonies this morning. Looks like a slight warming this weekend but still ice making at night and then they say it is going to drop again...so no end in sight on this well below normal temps. Heard on the news that this time last year it was +19C. Such a different start this time around.

Default Best guesses

In summary.

2017 Season Opens here this year on Monday December 11th;

8.0 inches - Zip-in-Z
8.5 inches - yoteblaster
10.0 inches - kevinhits
11.0 inches - SNAPFisher
11.0 inches - swampy45 [And a 1 ton in a pear tree ]
12.0 inches - Habfan
13.0 inches - 223MB
14.0 inches - latenite

There are four and half weeks to go. I'm thinking Habfan and 223MB are in the sweet spot. Winner gets bragging rights until next year

Still lots of open water on Sylvan today, things were lookin good earlier to build some clear dark ice, unfortunately the forcast isn't going to help much.

Tks Snap for the summary .... maybe I still have a chance.

I spent the day reflecting over all those fallen men & women in our community, tomorrow they will be remembered, have 70+ memorial wreaths to present at our Remembrance Day Ceremony.

Been foggy & warm here the last day or two, may have lost some ice, still lots of open water and the Canada's are still hanging around. Sylvan could be interesting this year.

1bluZebec that measurement is about the same odds as winning the 649 .... good luck.

Tease the hunters a bit .... must be the Rut season Brutus is back in town dating a few of his lady friends that hide out on the Sylvan G&CC.

About 350 yds from my back door.

November 18th 2017 - Frozen Over

Sylvan is completely frozen over, after the snow stopped yesterday afternoon & it cleared up, all you could see is white! Last year it wasn't until Dec 07th for the lake to be completely ice covered, that's 19 days ahead this year. Went out today to have a look ....

See .... Down town next to main Pier

Norglenwold to the west

½ Moon Bay in Distance

Sunbreaker Boat Launch in distance

RR 23 North shore

30 paces out

Axe’d out a hole

Stanley says 3” clear ice

.

Hope you enjoyed the pic's ... will update on Dec 9th or 10th ... Season opens here on Monday Dec 11th.

So far I'm in the lead with the ice thickness guess.

Cheers

David
