yup, but the AR500 gong is hard to see - its way downrange getting the 7mmRM dialed for New Zealand - 19 days a counting

Thanks to everyone for the prompt payment/pickups on round #2 of the AR500 GB
As an update, I took some of this steel out to be torture-tested today, with some interesting results. The sample piece of steel was a 16" x 16" square in 3/8" thickness. I set up the stand to face the steel plate angled to the left of my shooting position, so if there were any ricochets, they would deflect into the hill to my left.
Setup 1
- 40 yards
- plate angle relative to my shooting position - ~23 degrees from square
Results
- 7WSM
100gr Sierra HP started at 3711fps at the muzzle - Clean hole
162gr A-Max started at 3065fps at the muzzle - Slight dimple
140gr TTSX started at 3330fps at the muzzle - Slight galling damage
- .243AI
105gr A-Max started at 3161fps at the muzzle - Slight dimple
Setup 2
- 97 yards
- plate angle relative to shooting position - ~20 degrees
Results
- 7WSM
100gr HP - Almost punched hole, AR500 plug pushed about half way out of plate
Setup 3
- 148 yards
- Shooting angle - ~18 degrees
Results
- 7WSM
100gr HP - Some galling damage
Setup 4
- 199 yards
- Shooting angle - ~17 degrees
Results
- 7WSM
100gr HP - Moderate dimple
I was able to use a JBM ballistic calculator to solve for the various impact velocities, which I've arranged from highest to lowest:
Bullet - Impact Vel. (FPS) - DAMAGE OBSERVED
100 HP - 3551 - HOLE
100 HP - 3285 - ALMOST PUNCHED THROUGH, PLUG NEARLY EXITED
140 TTSX - 3239 - SLIGHT DAMAGE
105AM - 3093 - SLIGHT DIMPLE
100 HP - 3070 - SOME DAMAGE
162AM - 2975 - SLIGHT DIMPLE
100 HP - 2845 - MODERATE DIMPLE
Here are a few observations about shooting AR500 I've made over the years, including today:
- Impact velocity is the largest factor in damaging AR500 steel
- Bullet construction plays a large role in how much damage a bullet does (avoid steel-core and AP ammo!)
- Impact angle of the plate affects how much of the bullet's energy and momentum the plate absorbs, and hence how much damage is done to the plate, versus how much it is able to deflect in another direction
Ignore the 3 groups fired using reduced BD loads

Nice... I played with some 5/8" T6061 aluminum scraps about 6yrs ago... Strikingly simmilar results... Big surprise for me was when I punched clean thru with a 174gr Hornady interlock from my enfield yet a 174gr WW2 FMJ hardly scratched it...
Might have to get in on by #3

When I spoke to my friends about this, and mentioned that I was getting a 8", they all pretty much had the same opinion. Too Small, Dont be Cheap!
Well, I had my reasons, and am glad I got what I did.
Its alot less to lug out into a field, and being only 8" with a single mounting hole has made it pretty easy to set up in a multiple amount of ways.
Not to mention,
it is making me focus more on accuracy and the basics, to develop good shooting habits.
I am less worried about round count, and more on my own stance, and learning to calculate the changes I need to make.
With my .223, at 160-200 yards, you can barely even tell its getting scratched, and this target is going to last a LONG time.
Cant say thank you enough to Jordan, Lefty and Wolf!
Oh and if anyone is having trouble seeing it at the distances, I found after scrubbing the plate a bit with some steel wool, and cleaning it with brakekleen that it took duracoat spray really easily, and you can paint damn near any picture you want.

Glad you're enjoying the target!
Just FYI, you don't have to scrub with steel wool. The maroon primer that's on the steel will take most any paint after you clean it up a bit with some brake cleaner. I find that engine enamel works really well and it's very cheap at Can Tire. White gives excellent contrast against the dark bullet marks on the steel when the paint chips off.
Here's an example:

If enough guys want plates moving forward, we could probably do a third run.

good steel on them, my 308 doesnt even leave an impression on them at 500 yards.(matchkings)
or my nephews sks at 200
now to find some armour piercing rounds ...... and claim the warranty.
haha ,thanx JS.
so i went to the farm to go shoot ,last weekend,my 10" circle target, got my truck stuck in the snow, hiked out 430 yards by the time father in law came to pull me out. forgot my dope at that range, took 3 shots ,i had hung to eyes from a folding sawhorse .third shot ,smack, target fell over.dam and i thought i was pretty smart for rigging up a small portable target , can carry target in one hand ,sawhorse in other. walk back ,set it at 500 yards, walk back ,fired- smack, fell over again.DOH. next morning i did some load testing for fathers new rifle and did the offhand challenge thing that 260 got us to do. picked up the sawhorse and target , got a welder friend near the farm to make me two detachable legs set at 45 degrees back to accomodate swing, painted. so now i have a 6 legged sawhorse and ill test it out probably this weekend

Okay guys, it looks like it's time to do another run. My PM inbox is filling up quick with more guys wanting steel.
GB number 3 is now officially on for 2 weeks. My PM box is constantly full during these GB's, so email me if you want some steel- jordan (at) jerbelautowerks (dot) com

Good on you Jordan.
Just want to specify that I am good for steel currently and as a result I will NOT be transporting steel from Calgary to Edmonton for this run....sorry.

- 14" circle or square - 3/8" - $70 each, 1/2" - $83 each
- 16" circle - 3/8" - $84 each, 1/2" - $96 each
- 16" square - 3/8" - $79 each, 1/2" - $102 each
- 18" circle - 3/8" - $101 each, 1/2" - $105 each
- 18" square - 3/8" - $126 each, 1/2" - $165 each
- 66% IPSC plate - 19"x12" - 3/8" - $75 each, 1/2" - $93 each
