When i was a kid our dog got diabetes. Every day Dad would give her her shot of insulin. Eventually she went blind and then died about a year later. We almost needed a seeing eye dog for our dog.

Yes, one of my dogs from the past was diagnosed with diabetes.
It wasn't to bad. One dose of insulin a day, watch the diet and keep the water bowl full.
He was an older dog when diagnosed (around 8 years) and still had a couple healthy years afterwards.
Eventually he lost his eyesight and had to be put down.
Apparently diabetes in dogs is quite common. At least that's what the vet told us.
