I have both Rio Grande and SA GPX. I like the GPX better. Rio Grande has a longer head so it actually roll casts better but I think the GPX loads a fast rod a bit better. It's just my opinion though and it might work with your casting stroke but you should have cast it with your rod first.

Rio has recently changed their lines according to a couple of articles I have read. The Gold is now 1/2 wt. heavy like the Grand used to be and the new Grand is a full wt. heavy.

If the line you bought is old stock it will be 1/2 heavy.

I like the taper better on the Gold but the wt. of the old Grand so the change may be a good thing. I found the Grand casts good but is intrusive hitting the water no matter how careful one is. I also found that it didn't roll as nicely as the Gold.

What bothers me the most about Rio lines is the durability. I switched all my rods to SA and Cortland. They cast every bit as nicely and last for years.

I started off using the Grande, and one day tried the Gold as I heard how much everyone likes it. I ended up switching back to the Grande as I found I missed feeling the heavier taper weight at the end of my backcast as it helps load your rod. I couldn't feel it using the Gold and it threw off my timing.
