Ammo for 7mm rem. mag.

I just bought a Vanguard 2 7mm rem. mag. and am looking for some help in choosing the best ammo. For this year I just want to buy some boxed ammo but next year I intend to reload my own so any recommendations on factory loads or hand loads would be awesome. Main targets will be deer, elk and moose. I know some people consider this to be overkill for your average whitetail but I've never had a problem with my deer being too dead. Range will be less than 500 yards, average about 250.

160 grain partitions outta mine are deadly drop elk and deer hardly any damage shot alot of animals with them and accuracy is really good still

I dont find it over kill all me and my father use is 7mm and it just drops everything with a well placed shot

Anything with 160 gr Accubonds (I believe Federal loads the accubonds in factory boxed loads).

Many 7mm's love 160-165 gr bullets, I don't know why they just do. Personally I use sierra game kings, they seem to be the one my gun likes. I've downed a lot of deer and at last count 17 moose with them. It's a great calibre as far as I'm concerned.

The last 7mm rem mag I had loved Barnes Vortex 160gr TTSX, 1/4-1/2 MOA groups all day. Hornady superformance in the 162 SSt's shot under 1 MOA as well.

I use 140gr premium bullets in my 7mmremmag rifles, and in my 7mmstw rifles, for all of my big game hunting, from pronghorns, to moose, to elk. Use whatever weight you want, but with a good quality bullet, there is no need to use a heavier bullet. The 140gr TTSX is my current favorite, although I do intend to do some more testing next spring with the 139gr GMX. The 140gr Accubond also works well, although it doesn't penetrate as well as the monometal bullets.

Mine shoots Hornady with 139 GMX bullets like a dream.

I use 160 Nosler Accubonds in numerous 7's. However, our poster might not want to spend close to 46 bucks on a box of ammo. You could start with Federal Blue box 150 grain to get you started. Selection is pretty awesome in the 7.

Federal Fusion ammunition is good for big game. They are bonded and inexpensive.

My bullet of choice is the 168 Berger VLD. Kills effectively at close range and far. Kills little animals and big animals.

Anything 160gr, I've used swift a-frames, original X bullets, partitions, accubonds. Most accurate in mine are the trophy bonded tip from federal, and they look cool too , no on game performance yet though.
Might want to also check out 150gr swift sirrico (sp?) or if your budget minded 150 cor-lokt or 150 fusions - lots of good factory loads for the 7mag - have fun.

I'm With Bobby B. - 168 Bergers. I don't reload either and buy mine in factory ammo (HSM) from Corlaines in Dawson Creek.

I use 175 PP Win 27$ and it makes a mess of the ribs if i hit one and for the longer distance they work well if you have any air movement.. i have over 100 harvests

I shoot 150 grain winchester power max bonded outta my ruger m77 7mm mag and they shoot 1" groups at 200 yrds no problem

I'm in the same boat as the op, hopefully start hand loading next year for mine, and as for factory ammo my gun seems to like the 150gr rem corelokts. I actually bought mine from my buddy and he gave me his load data for this gun as well. So when I start loading I'll be shooting 162gr hornady sst.

X2 on those federal trophy bonded tip bullets. This years Whitetail Buck was taken down with one and man what a mess it did on the ribs and heart. There was no heart left I mean.......they work real well. Im going to stick with them and the bonus is they shoot really well out of a 7mm rem mag. (160 grn) cheers!!!!

I'm generalizing, but the ballistics on 165 grain or near are superior to 150 or 175, especially at 300+ yards. That said, I'd go looking soon, as supply issues are getting ridiculous in Canada due to US panic buying. Shelves were half bare at both Bass Pro and Wholesale today in Calgary. You may find yourself a beggar, not a chooser.

Good to hear some field results with that bullet, from what I've read they should be good performers.

FYI, federal has discontinued the 160 accubond load for the 7rm, probably to help promote their tbt line.
