Default Best weed killer

My backyard is just a pile of dirt and weeds and I plan on sodding it soon. I will be tilling the ground and picking out as many weeds by hand as possible but I also want a strong weedkiller to make sure everything is dead but that wont ruin the ground long term. I was thinking about bleach but read it will change the PH of the ground which wouldn't be good for the new grass.

TLDR: I need a strong weedkiller that wont ruin the ground long term, theres no grass yet so I don't have to worry about it being selective.

Recommendations?

Roundup. But if you are wise spray it before you pull any weeds. After you spray, wait 3 days before pulling any weeds. It will probably take a week before you see everything browning off. If you are sodding it anyway, don't even waste your time pulling the weeds (unless you have a jungle). They will simply decompose under the sod you lay. Just spray 1 wk before laying sod... And voila!

by mistake I used roundup spot spraying weeds. It then rained and all the grass around the weed was also killed. I then had a hard time getting grass to grow in those areas after. I put in new soil but it took over a year before grass would grow there again. live and learn

Thanks for all the tips! I'll pick up some round up today and get spraying.
qmurphy: ya its a jungle out there, I have weeded the entire backyard twice by hand trying to get all the roots and they are shin height again

Artie: That must have sucked, I'll keep it in mind!

round up is your friend it works on pesky plants like peonies, carrots, daffodils, petunias, salad bearing vegetables and weeds.

Lay a tarp over the area and cover it with a few rocks to keep it from blowing away. No herbicide required.

Matches, I'm in the same boat as you. Another vote for the roundup, but I bought the concentrated jug and pump sprayer from Home Depot. I think it was 30 bucks for the concentrated jug and it makes 20L of spray. Spray bottle was another 20 bucks. Pays for itself almost immediately and is much easier to apply to large areas.

If you're planting sod soon after, read the roundup bottle to make sure, but the one I got has no residual action in soil. Proof - there are new weeds growing already.

Default Good And Bad Round-up

Another Vote for Round-up, Just Finished Spraying for the last 3 hours. But The Round-up from Home Depot Aint the good stuff anymore. I get it From UFA and need to prove that I am using it on a Property outside of City Limits. And it works great. Just read the Directions Close (They aint easy to make sense of) You do not need much of the concentrate at all in a spray container. I usually only put in about a cup and a bit and it kills EVERYTHING Dead. Par 3 Is also good but it will only kill the Weeds and not grass. It is what I spray to get rid of the Dandylions in the Yard

i use a fuzzy sleeved paint roller (drenched in roundup or par3 etc)with a long handle to do near sensitive plants or make perfectly straight kill-offs on property lines.
better on windy days too

Brake clean does the trick. The little red nozzles help you get it right where you need it

if you are tilling the ground why spray? just mow down the weeds, let the weeds dry a bit and then till. if you need to you could spot spray persistent weeds after the lawn is established. there is some kind of new lawn grass on the market now that outcompetes weeds plus IT NEVER NEEDS MOWING. ask at CT or home depot.

I use 7% vinegar, Dawn dish soap and water mix. It might take two or three applications, but it kills them dead and is as environmentally friendly as it gets. Cheap too.

Default Weeds

I like roundup but it's a post emergent killer, only kills what's up. My handy tiger torch does the same thing and I feel a bit better about it for some reason.

Roundup is about all we have available. Eliminator - if you can find it - works better.
