Add on $150.00 for a new trigger, then you'll have a decent rifle.

The 257 Roy is about as flat shooting as they come.
If you start a 100gr. bullet @ 3500fps (26" bbl) sight it in for 2.5' high at 100yds, it is less than 9" low at 400yds, and less than 24" low at 500yds.
In the neighborhood of 1300ftlbs left at 400yds too.

115gr bullets starting at 3300fps(26" bbl) and the same 2.5" high at 100, are about 2.5" lower at 400 and 4" lower at 500yds, with almost the same of retained energy at both distances.

For N. American game there are few flies on the 257 Roy, it might not be the quindesential elk or moose caliber, but from all I've seen with my 25'06, it cant be too far off of being called totally adequate.

for $1400 it must be a Mark V......the Vanguard Back Country with Bell & Carlson stock is about a grand.......there are Vanguards for a lot less.....

Remington is making a 257 Weatherby in stainless with laminate stock.

It's a flat shooting cartridge to be sure....100 grainers at 3600+.....

If you're not reloading you should think twice though....not much selection in factory ammo and it's big$$...but then again...how much will the average guy shoot a 257 Wtby?...one good load is all you need.

I guess 1 should qualify what flat shooting means.
Out to about 600 yards which is a long stretch for most, it is flat shooting, then it starts to fall off like a rock in velocity and energy.
For most hunting it is an adequate cartridge at modest distances, but like all light bullet calibers, is more effected by wind. Penetration can also be an issue as lighter bullets tend to have thinner jackets than heavier calibers will.

W/S in Calgary has the vangaurd for 499.00 and tax, then the price goes up from there.
I recently bought a Vangaurd in .257 Wby and shoots 1-1/2'' groups all day long with factory ammo...ok I ran a box through it and they all grouped 1-1/2'' ... with Factory 100grn spire points.
I just shot a fork buck in BC at a Great distance of 30 yrds and he ran another 20 yrds before he fell over dead. Split his liver in half broke some ribs and a little bit of blood shot meat, all in all it was over kill for this guy , but the gun and bullet did its job.
As for your other question Remington has a 700 Chambered in .257 for somewhere near a grand plus taxe. I think it is some sort of tribute or they just decided to revive that Cartridge...
If you get one, try the Hornady loadings and report back what your results are please.
Hope we helped you spend some of your hard earned monies.
Rob
ps, Thanks Dick for running the ballistics program for me

rembo is bang on..if you dont reload..dont start now. the brass for 257 is 3.00 each and you might get three to five reloads from case, a well developed 25-06 load is better than a detuned 257wby load...run them to the (safe) max.
i use 4831imr powder and get 3600fps and usually less than an inch groups. my next loads will be around 3700-3800 with ssc7828imr..if the accuracy holds up i will laffing.
currently i have three 257wbys, two ultralites and one deluxe mark 5.
-remington has a 'preferred dealer only' edition of the 257wby in a 700 action, Pud has one at bashaw sports last time i was there.
i think the 257 is a fantastic cartridge for North America type animals and our Alberta hunting styles. I feel that a flat shooting gun is just as useful in 'threading the needle' in heavy cover, launching a pellet down a 200 yard cutline, or throwing a long bomb across an open feild. quite often this is typical were big timber meets big fields, were the buck could be at 40 or 400 yards and this is exactly what alberta is.
ive taken moose and elk, antelope, wolves, lots of deer, tons of yotes.
I feel it is an excellent 'beginers' cartridge, because it has small felt recoil, ultaflat trajectory means that the new shooter just points and clicks, they dont have to be confused with rainbow arc-like ballistics of heavier bullets and downrange calculations on the fly. My wife finds it comfy to to shoot and hunt with.
like was said earlier, its 9" low at 400 yards..so you aim center mass on the deers front shoulder...and its there and its down. this is a 1/4 mile dragster of cartridges with pressures and conditions that a rock solid cartridge (like a 308win or 3006) does not have to contend with.
i shot a crow on round bale from my house the other day at 391 yards...i put the crosshairs about 4-5" over its back, and poof...it vapourized!
things to remember IMO:
must have 26" barrel, I use 100 gr triple shock premium bullets for hunting anything, hot loads, regular swabbing, do not get it hot at the range, lots of time between groups/shots.
cheers
roger

That's how I loaded my 257Wtby...actually you don't have to trim...they end up a bit shorter as they are...not a problem.
