Default Who Needs Wire Mesh for Colony/Submarine Traps?

I have to get some 1"x1"x36" 16 gauge wire mesh to make my colony and submarine muskrat traps and I'm planning on going down to pick some up at Continental Wire Mesh in Calgary next week. A 100' roll only costs about $100 but they want another $100 to ship the 77 lb roll here. It'll probably cost me the same amount in gas but I have a few things that I can do in Calgary anyway.

I wanted to see if anyone else wants some while I was down there and I'll charge $20/roll to bring them back to help pay for my gas. They have heavier gauge wire there too if anyone wanted 14 gauge or something else.

Also, a couple of people would be interested in getting me to make some colony traps for them. I have the time and means to do them but if anyone else wants any made, let me know and I'll pick up the extra wire mesh that I'll need to make them. I'd be very reasonable on the price but I'd need to know the size of traps that you wanted before I could come up with it (ie 5"x5", 6"x6", etc).

For now, I'm just putting this out there to see how much interest there is in it and we can work out all of the details after that. I live in Morinville so that's where the pick up location would be. I'll wait to hear from you guys.

that's a great price. i just bought a 50ft roll for 100$.

you could make 30 subs or 50 6 "colony traps out of a 100 ft roll.

to bad i just bought some.

Hardly anyone carries it in the Edmonton area and Home Hardware wants $40 for 20'.

I haven't figured it out yet Nube but I'm thinking between the $10 - $15 range for a 5"x5"x24" colony trap. I'm not sure that I want to get into making submarine traps just yet but if the demand was there I'd certainly give it some thought.

BTW I mentioned $20/roll to help pay for the gas but if there was enough demand (ie over 5 rolls) I'd divy the $100 cost up equally so it'd be less.

Default is this one inch square mesh Dave?

Hunting buddy dropped a roll off a month ago asking if I had any use for it for the birds. Never thought of muskrat traps. Saw a "funnel trap" for them many years ago when I took the course but never used one. Looked somewhat like those old minnow traps we used to use to catch bait but larger.

"is this one inch square mesh Dave?"

Yes, it's 1"x1" squares by 36" wide in rolls of 100 feet.

I've searched just about everywhere in the Edmonton area for the past month and it's double or triple the price if you can find it. Rona has small rolls in 19 gauge but it's too flimsy and would squash out of shape too easily. Home Hardware has 16 gauge in 20' rolls for $40 and the UFA wanted $3.19/foot for 14 gauge. Other construction supply distributors that I talked with wanted +$250 for the same roll. $100/roll is pretty darned good in comparison.

you can use 1 by 2 wire. might be cheaper?

and i wonder if a person really needs 16 ga for the subs.

colony traps maybe, but having just built some subs. i thinks its over kill( the 16 ga)

for the subs, it might actually be beneficial to be able to squash them down into tight spots, runs, and shallower water.

Nice traps braggadoe.

I had a look at the 19 gauge wire at Rona and my concern is that it won't keep its shape and wouldn't last too long. I thought that it'd be a PITA with them constantly losing their shape while transporting them, etc.

The 16 gauge should have a little give for putting traps into tight spots but I was thinking of bringing a shovel and deepening or widening runs as opposed to trying to make the trap fit the way that it is.

Since this is my first time trapping rats, a lot is going to be trial and error/a learning experience so if I find that 19 gauge wire would work better, I can always pick it up at Rona.

As always, I value your advise and appreciate your input! Thanks!

It'd depend on the size, Nube. For a 5"x5"x24" long I'm thinking about $10. For a 6"x6"x30" maybe a few bucks more......cheap like borscht!

LAST CALL! I'm headed to Calgary tomorrow or Wednesday.

Default Wire Mesh Traps

Where did you acquire the raw material? Been to 3 local shoppes and have seen nothing like this! What is the measurement from wire to wire? How many wires per inch? Just checked out the resources tab here www.wiremesh.com and see this is close to a 3 x 3 wire mesh? .063 wire diameter?

thanks.

1" x 1" squares x 36" long of 16 gauge welded wire. You can buy it at Continental Wire Mesh in Calgary. All of the information is in this thread.

Default Rat subs

We used to make them from chicken wire which is has 6 sided 1 inch holes
and we used the stiff wire with 1x1 inch square holes for the funnels.
We made several different diameters to fit different size runs. We left the
sub hung in the willows beside each run from season to season. Every 4-5
runs we would not set a run and leave those for breeding stock because the
subs are deadly. We used to set in november with 3-4 inches of ice, sometimes with no snow the runs are very visable. Our take was between
3000 to 4000 per year, we had a old guy hired to help skinning and stretching.
Has anyone tried making the body from stucco wire.

Your best bet buying this mesh may be to go to one of the supply houses of wire mesh / wire cloth - possibly some place like:

http://www.mcmaster.com

or

http://www.bwire.com

The more these places have in stock and just sitting there taking up space on their shelves, the better pricing you can negotiate.... Shelf space is expensive!

If it was 16 gauge 1"x1" I would have bought it from you if I lived closer, Birds. I just cut up the last of a roll to make colony and submarine traps for people that want to use them this Spring. I'm going to have to buy a new roll if I get more orders anyway.

Default my mistake it is 1 inch

Not sure what gauge but I put a quarter on edge of roll for perspective.

4 feet long, sorry pictures are not very good in barn due to low light condiditons.

PCP from Nanton spoke up first so he has first choice/right of refusal.
