Default Is it possible to own a buiesiness with a criminal record?

does anyone know if you can own a business with a criminal record. The business is a an apartment building and she would be getting charged with domestic abuse.

No this isn't me...I'm asking for a friend that's going through this right now and it's already in her name

I thought it was a pre-requisite to being a landlord...

Judging by many of my employers I was beginning to think it's a prerequisite to being a business owner.

A certain individual that guides resident bear hunters is well known on AO as a convicted criminal..

Getting bonded maybe a tad tougher due to brushes with the law but for the most part for many its just getting your stripes on.

Of course you can. Knew of a guy who had a family member run his legit business while in jail.

Think outlaw biker clubs. Many biker club members have legit business's. Some who have records even. Heck they even own hotels, night clubs etc.

Just covering my butt by saying not all biker club members have criminal records either though.

Often the best way to get a job with a criminal record is to create your own.

H.A's have many successful business's haha

Nothing illegal about running a business, so nothing preventing an ex-con from operating one.

Now if the position requires being bonded, that's another story.

Depending upon the conviction there can be rules put in place.

Molesting kids...can't own a day care.

Insider trading...can't own a trading company.

Poaching...can't be a guide.

All depends upon what the judge does at times.

Needing to travel to the US...conviction could prevent that.

... or a politician.

A criminal record would be a handy prerequisite for being a slum landlord.

A background check is required to obtain a business license in Calgary, Orv. Don't know about smaller jurisdictions, best to check with the municipality.

Olds, huh? When'd that happen?

Would a person who had a criminal record be refused a business license in Calgary?

Section 8(1) of the Calgary Business License Bylaw, 32M98, states:

The Chief Licence Inspector may consult, prior to issuing or renewing a
licence, with the Province of Alberta, the Calgary Police Service, Alberta Health Services, Planning, Development & Assessment, and the Calgary Fire Department, as listed in Schedule "A", and may consult with other bodies the
Chief Licence Inspector deems advisable, to determine whether they are in possession of information which, in the opinion of the Chief Licence Inspector, renders it inappropriate to issue or renew a licence.

Schedule A indicates which businesses need which approvals - looking at it, I see that, typically, apartment building operators don't require a criminal background check. However, it's ultimately up to the Chief License Inspector.

Here's a link to the bylaw - Schedule A starts on Page 42 of the Bylaw.
