Very true. I don't remember people in Alberta saying the same things or feeling the same way about the lumber industries in BC when a lot of the mills shut down and people were thrown out of work, and when the auto makers were going to go bankrupt the Federal Gov (Conservative) ponied up a bunch of taxpayer money to save all those jobs.

I don't understand why its okay to point fingers at Albertans when the oil an gas industry is on hard times and say "you should have saved your money then" but the same is not said when other industries have hard times and those people lose their jobs.

Why are Albertans and the oil industry singled out for this BS?

petty jealousy...they have no problem with an unskilled union auto worker making $50/hr with all the perks, but a kid busting his butt on a rig for $35/hr. is an abomination to them...

Holy batman , maybe this mess will awaken people to take a vested interest in the greedy machinations of business running the government, to do more than just vote ! Take to the streets.
Remember the oil will still be there ... the trees will grow back in 100 years and the sun will shine and the wind will blow... after the corporations flee to another jurisdiction to pillage, as has been going on forever.
Its going upside down , end times are upon us !

I hope the whole country wasn't depending on your Hardisty gig ... and I never did get a cheque ? We are maybe getting to a sustainable Alberta, and by that I mean .. What do you have to say about every town that over built their hotels , restaurants , truck dealerships , corner stores based on the boom ? how about them ? OH wait the housing market I forgot .. about the 20.00 hour rigger that bought a 450,000.00 house and then left .. How did he leave , well at the Edmonton airport.. park the 60,000.00 truck and leave ..yes we owe you a lot ....

I read your post and all I see is jealously. There is no other reason why you'd be so negative about other people doing well. I'm all for people doing well making money and spending. If it wasn't for spending the economy would collapse. Not like most everything didn't get a financial bump from the boom.

An excellent point. What did the conservatives (prov or fed) do to ensure sustainability in the O&G industry?

Why didn't anyone ask them to?
Why does no one want to hold the accountable?...

I did answer your question, you chose to ignore it, and a customer service company in Alberta that doesn't rely on resources?...that's rich...

the pc gov did start a plan to help weather out busts cycles under the leadership of peter laugheed . it was called the "heritage trust fund" .unfortunately as years went by the the pc gov kept " dipping " into the fund and although there were clear guidelines on how much was to be contributed to the fund , the pc kept breaking the rules had not made the proper contributions for years . this includes the last decade of " boom" times with $100 oil .
why is no one accountable ? good question . I never read squat on here about provincial economics before the election . now it sounds like every second person wants to lynch the ndp .
the ndp may or may not be helping matters but they are not responsible for the mess we are in . it has been about ten or twenty years in the making .

nice try ... you want a booming alberta , with oil/gas only and when the ship sinks all you're concerned about is the industry it self and directly ..How bout those hotels , restaurants , dealerships , corner stores etc that the boom money went too and was fake ... as in temporary ..

Default 2 Facts

Regardless of who caused the mess, the NDP are currently in power with a majority government, so only they can make decision that will stimulate the Alberta economy.

And

If the NDP announced today that the Royalty review was complete and rates would remain the same for a minimum of the next 3 years, there would be an immediate positive impact on investment dollars in this province.

I am concerned about every single person that is affected by this slow down, and that covers a lot more than just the people that work directly in the oil and gas industry. Alberta is and will be for the foreseeable future , a province that relies on a resource based economy. That includes oil and gas, mining, logging and agriculture. When any of these are affected by world economics, coupled with our current political situation, sooner or later every citizen of the province is going to feel it. That's my concern.....

True story. You pin heads that keep stating that the economy is solely due to the price of oil makes me sad.

Our provincial economy will continue to decline and our debt to rise for as long as we have an NDP government. That's what NDP governments do to a province, historically and practically. An honest fact and true, even if the ndp supporters will scream blue murder in denial.

A lot of the younger people had never experienced failure or hardship, and that's why we have an ndp government. This is simply a 4 year educational exercise that is necessary to teach the next generation that there is no free lunch.

In 4 years we will have suffered enough and should be ready to correct our mistake and start to move ahead again.

I agree with your first point . i know for a fact that some of the projects we had have fallen off the table soley based on commodity prices . some have been differed because of low commodity prices and uncertainty with the new gov and the royalty issues . locking the royalties where they are or presenting royalty holidays would stimulate some growth for sure . how dramatic a change it would make with $35 oil is questionable .

for the record i did not vote ndp nor do i buy into their philosophy . i do feel that there is someone who is responsible for the mess and i am glad they are no longer in power .

The copper mine my brother works at just shut down it's pit after having it's best year ever (mine has been running 10-15years so far iirc). Reason, very weak prices and lack of consumption.

Until a nation like India, or the continent of Africa is able to mobilize the required financial means to 'modernize' as China has been doing for the past few decades commodity prices will remain soft. As long as commodity prices remain soft, resource economies like Canada will suffer.

As a nation we have few options, the one that makes most sense is to invest in Canadians. Infrastructure, Education, and dare I say it programs that boost social and cultural cohesion.

79ford mentioned borrowing has dried up, this really isn't true. Interest rates are still rock bottom, fiat is still cheap. Lending and investing has been hurt because of the low prices of commodities restricting the ability to make a profit and no one lends or invests without the prospect of a return.

Low oil prices and low commodity prices aren't necessarily a bad thing. It makes new infrastructure cheaper to construct. Cheap energy lends to cheaper manufacturing costs, with Site C construction rolling now, the NDP should look at courting manufactures from energy expensive Ontario to move to the GP area. There are opportunities aplenty when everything is cheap, including money, if mobilized correctly. What's the basis of good investing? Buy low and sell high. well energy and building materials and commodities are low right now, we should be taking advantage of that.
