This is an opportunity for you to protect Alberta's fish and wildlife resources. Your daily duties will be varied, often exciting and always meaningful, as you conduct education, prevention, and enforcement activities. One of your primary responsibilities will be to enforce federal and provincial laws and regulations relative to fish and wildlife resources. This includes responding to complaints and patrolling a designated district by truck, all-terrain-vehicle, snowmobile, watercraft, and aircraft or on foot. You will inspect commercial operations, conduct surveillance, gather evidence, execute search and arrest warrants, organize and conduct investigations, interview witnesses and suspects, prepare trial briefs and testify in court.

Problem wildlife control is another significant responsibility and includes responding to reports of nuisance and problem wildlife, investigating livestock predation and crop damage complaints. In addition, you will provide public education about branch programs, including making presentations at schools and community meetings. You will have regular contact with various stakeholder groups: including sportsmen, commercial fishers, guides, outfitters, trappers, landowners, industry representatives and other citizens.

To be successful in this challenging role you require exceptional communication, negotiation and problem solving skills; you must be self-motivated and have the ability to lead, build and maintain relationships and work well independently as well as within a team environment.

Being a Fish and Wildlife officer can involve strenuous physical activity and exposure to extreme environmental conditions. You must be physically capable of performing all duties of the position. You must have basic swimming skills.


Qualifications
An applied degree in conservation law enforcement and two years related experience. Equivalencies that will be considered include a Bachelor of Science degree in natural sciences plus two years related experience; a two-year technical diploma in natural sciences and four years related experience; or a two-year technical diploma in natural sciences plus a one year conservation law enforcement certificate and three years related experience. Candidates with lesser qualifications will be considered at a lower level and salary.

Salary $2,011.63 - $2,557.69 Bi-weekly

Notes
Final candidates for this position will undergo a medical assessment and psychological assessment. Candidates must be eligible for appointment as an Alberta Peace Officer. Candidates will attend an in-service training program at the Western Conservation Law Enforcement Academy and must successfully complete the program to continue employment.

This competition will be used to fill current vacancies as well as create an eligibility list for various positions across the province. Applicants should be willing to accept an assignment at any one of the 59 districts across the province, and must be able to work shift work, and standby.
