Default Second cartridge?

I currently run a 300 WM and it has served me well. I’m looking at building on the collection and wondering where I go from here. I want something that is flat shooting but will still serve well for deer, moose and elk but with less recoil. What caliber or cartridge should I be looking at. I’ve considered the trusty 30-06 but wonder if it’s too close to what I already own. I’ve heard great thing about the 7mm-08. Im open to other suggestions. Shots will typically be less than 350.

Thanks in advance.

The majority of the time I pack my 300wm when hunting moose or Elk. For deer I prefer my 6.5x55

Keep the .300 wm. Ideal rifle for what you have described. Put a decelerator recoil pad on it

He never said he was getting rid of it, I agree with the recoil pad, maybe even a thumb hole stock. A Boyle thumb hole with a limbsaver straightened mine right out and I run it hot. You can order them from Boyd’s perfectly fit if you know what fits you.

Yes, I’ll be keeping my 300 WM. I’m just planning on getting an additional gun that I can use interchangeably without having too much overlap.

I don't want to read too much into your post but it sounds like whatever you choose is going to end up supplanting the 300 WM based on recoil. No shame there - recoil sucks.

If you've just gotta buy something, I'd suggest looking at a 7mm Rem Mag, but pay attention to the rifle weight. Like the 300 WM its often a more comfortable shooting experience when there's a bit of meat to it (think Weatherby and some Sako, not Tikka and Browning).

Another post has mentioned a Boyd's stock for your 300 WM. Now THAT's good advice because if you buy something new, you'll always be faced with the dilemma of "what do I bring on this hunt" and likely end up putting the loser up for sale by at some point.

That’s a great chart, but it means nothing except for a generic “what ever they Measured” situation. The 30-30 and the 45-70 would be ballistics from old equipment on over the shelf ammo. I run my 45-70 at 3 times the factory ammo pressures. Apples to oranges to grapefruits.

270-280AI-6.5x284 Norma all good choices with about 60% of the recoil of you 300. All very flat shooting and plenty big enough for all you hunting needs.

The 270 Win would be a great alternative as mentioned by many. I’ve taken a couple bull elk with one, both around 300yds, both complete pass thru, and no tracking involved. The icing on the cake with the 270, is virtually identical trajectory to the 300, so no need to remember extra.

As Al Baker would say, if God shot a rifle, it would be a 270

That's a tuff question. Especially when elk and moose are involved. I think the 280AI may be a nice fit for what you are looking to do. Some 160 gr class bullets should work good on deer up to elk and moose. If you wanted just a light recoiling deer rifle I would recommend the 6.5X47. I have two and the performance on deer size game is amazing. 130 Bergers and 130 gr AccuBond.

if one was to have a 300win mag but want a 300 wby as your BIG gun, it really isn't enough to warrant it. you would have to jump to at least a 34 or 37 cal to attain that task \imo
id say go to a hot 24 offering, 25-06, a fast 2506AI or 257wby or 26 something. putting as much spread between the calibers gives versatility in your shooting conditions.
plus these are still legal BG chambers and work handily on everything that Alberta has to throw at it.

I was in the some boat many years back...300WM. I jumped on the 270WSM bandwagon soon after released as I wanted a smaller caliber and one my fiancé (now wife) could shoot. Been a great caliber with 140gr Accubonds.

A 7mm-08, 6.5x55 Swede, a 260 Remington, or maybe a 25-06 (if you get bored with the 25-06 be easy to make into a 338-06) for smaller caliber.

If you are looking smaller and to use for predators, a 243 would be perfect. 55-95gr bullets for predators, 90-110gr bullets for deer would work nicely.

You have a great cartridge in the .300WM but here's a plug for the .338-06.

It's simple to load for, great bullet selection is readily available and it easily delivers the freight to 350 yds. If you handle the recoil of the.300 WM well you will find the .338-06 a dream. Basically, I consider it a .30-06 on Steroids. A 225 gr bullet at 2700 MV is no slouch at the terminal end either. Well worth a look.

I went from 300wm to 25-06 I think they complement each other well. If your 300 kicked to much to could do some work to it and get it to weigh a bit more. 300wm and ultralight rifles dont mix well the 8.5lb area with a recoil pad and a break will tame that rifle a lot. There’s always a trade off and if you like super fast flat shooting high energy it’s going to come with recoil. There’s nothing wrong with a 308 7mm-08 look at randy Newburgh it’s all he uses, his line is the elk didn’t get the memo about having to use magnums.

Default 6.5 Creedmore

The 6.5 Creedmore seems to be the cartridge dJors lately. Might be worth looking at?

Thank you to everyone for the advice.

My 300 win mag is approx 8lbs and the recoil doesn’t bother me at all. I’m just looking for something new to buy and was curious what everyone’s opinions were for something that is smaller, flat, fast. It will be strictly a big game set up as I already have a predator rifle. Some great advice and cartridges to think about. If there’s any other options or opinions, let’s hear them.

Default 6.5x55

What you discribed is a 6.5x55 SE.
Why this round? Because it is superior to your needs.
But find this caliber in a modern action.......
This is the round that the creedmore copied.

I'm a bit confused with this post but if you are suggesting the 6.5 Creedmoor is a copy of the 6.5x55 SE, I suggest you check again. These two cartridges are nowhere closely related .. just the same caliber.

The 6.5 will duplicate 300 WM trajectory - easy on the shoulder, and hits harder than the ballisticians say it should. It's worth the search - others with this or that is "just as good" - they aren't.

If you want flat and fast with minimal recoil look at the 25-06. Not my first choice for elk or moose but it will get the job done. I think it is the perfect deer cartridge.

270 Win would be another good option.
