Default Favorite bush rifles you have known.

Having degenerated into a full on bush hunter, who can no longer be tempted to sit in a stand or hunt a hayfield by any size or rack, I was just wondering what types of rifles you guys have used and preferred for hunting the timber.

I've tried used everything from short carbines to long muzzleloaders, never tried an auto loader but I think I've used everything else. I always end up going back to my good old .270 just because I've used it for so long and am most comfortable with it. Unfortunatly she's a hefty old gal and after a long day of wandering around rifle in hand my wrists and knuckles are starting to get sore. Lately I've been packing around my old Lee Enfield because without a scope its a fair bit lighter, and despite its length it works pretty good. One of these years, however, I'll probably start shopping around for a new, more bush oriented rifle.

So let me know what you've liked, maybe its something I've never tried.

I like the Rem model 7 as a walk about. Short, swings nice and in calibers that let ya either brush hunt, or field sitting. Capable of doing both jobs nicely

Go old school.
Jungle carbine .303 - good enough in the 60s and 70s on Vancouver Island for me.
Get really sophisticated, add a 2.5x scope in TO1 mount, also like I did.

I've never owned one, but that looks like one of the best, you could end the thread with that picture there.

My contribution, only hunted (still some hunting left) for one season with it, steyr 9.3x62

A Savage 99 Lever in .300 Savage or .308 with open sights would serve you well.. Light, well balanced and reliable.

If we are talking a true brush gun for that 50 yd max shot, nothing beats the family heirloom 44 40 loaded with 200 grain bullets. Accurate as hell for that distance, fast and smooth and hits incredibly hard....when I was young I could keep a can rolling with that old gun. Truly old school.

Definitely something with a shorter barrel so it doesn't hang up on branches. Mine is a .444 Marlin or a Ruger Compact for deer. Something that can stop a big Grizz is nice, too. Just in case.

Remington 742 woodsmaster in 6mm rem with 2x7- 33 VX1. It carries lighter than it really weighs and smacks them good at closer ranges.

It's a 24" number 2 contour.

With the rifle only being 6lbs I find it easier to pack it in my hand while walking through the woods than using a shoulder strap. I keep my strap in my pack invade I shoot something.

Honourable mention to my model 92 and to my Ruger 338rcm

I like the BLR in .308, throw a fixed 4 on there if you want.

Anything short and light. Got my wife a Mossberg in .243Win with a bantam stock, but I carry it a lot when I'm after deer in the big woods. Just don't get tired while carrying it
