Default Corb Lund on Coal Policy Changes and our Eastern Slopes

Friend just shared this video from Corb Lund where he talks about recent changes to the Alberta Coal Policy and opening of the eastern slopes to mountain top mining.

Apart from making good music he clearly definitely cares about folks in this province and what this all means. In my mind something we should be paying attention to as hunters/anglers and conservationists (and farmers). Give it a listen before you comment.

Another uneducated person from the entertainment industry yapping is all I see in the video

Seems we are getting bombarded with anti coal posts by AO members that rarely contribute lately

Personally, I really don't care what entertainers have to say about the environment or politics.

yah they have a platform developed from one talent then generally run with that and spin off of it only to make complete idiots of themselves with a following from the original platform....common denominator in this is...idiots.

He has a vested interest. Grew up there. More connection to the area than most.

Very possible but that doesn’t mean his opinion is based on realistic facts. If anything it makes it more likely that his opinion is based more on emotion

Corb is a musician and should stay in his lane. Him and I have several mutual friends and he is definitely in the left end of the spectrum. Just a hippie dressed up as a cowboy.

Good on him for using his brand on a good cause. More people are aware because of it.

If there was no opposition these resource companies would operate pretty much unfettered with no regulatory oversight. I've had to move hunting areas year after year because oil companies were pushing roads everywhere. There's hardly anything left in this province that's unspoiled or wild.

If mines wind up on areas that had corridors for access we could be shut out of areas 10 times the size of the initial proposal.

From what I've read they also had it gifted to them for a fraction of the royalties currently paid in Australia.

What happens if the companies go bankrupt? Who fixes up the mess? This Province continues to let some of the resource companies get away with murder.

The greenies are well organized and are picking us apart one by one. They do not want mining, no logging, shut down the oil sands, no cattle as they produce to much methane and no farming because of the fertilizers.
Who is left to produce something to sell?

Or to eat.

But I'm done. It's a waste of time trying to warn people who want to believe the lie.
I have better things to do with my time. My future is assured.

For those that use this area frequently the selling off of resources and closing public areas would be easier to swallow if all the product wasn't being shipped directly to CHINA. Just another example of sending our resources somewhere else. I am not against resource development at all but this stinks.

Bunch of angry old men on this forum. If you dont work in the industry you should not have an opinion. Neil Young really beat some guys up!

Anyway, if you are a hunter or a fisherman or care about the environment here is an article from Outdoor Canada.

Funny how many people cried about the Bighorn Park was going to lock them out. They weren't going to be able to use the west country, yet here you are getting locked out of even larger areas of land by coal mining. I thought places like Hanna, Grande Cache, Forestburg, Wabumum were dying because the mines were closing, but now mines are needed. Those towns could be ramping up instead of mining in the mountains. Or was those towns deaths just cun#servative lies?

Metallurgical coal is different than that burned for power in most cases.

Wabamun took a hit because they shuttered the old power plant. The coal operations in the area are still going I think. They are just shipping it to China, because as you know green house gasses are only a problem if produced in North America.

Same. I'm all for them having a voice, we are all entitled to our own opinion.

But their voice shouldn't carry more weight than someone else's just because they are a successful entertainer.

You can make power without coal, but you cannot make new steel without metallurgical coal. You can recycle steel with an electric arc blast furnace, but turning iron or into steel requires the carbon from coming coal.

I believe that the environment and the coal mines can coexist, and I've made a career out of making mines safe, clean, and cost efficient.

He has just as much right to state his opinion as any of the 'experts' on this forum. Just because you aren't talented enough to have an audience (other than those here)...too bad.

Lund is a third rate singer looking for publicity.

Tough place to make a statement like that but it has to said. It's the same fight here in Yukon. Outside mining interests on the corporate government tit looking for freebies to build a mine which they walk away from in 3 years. The road is already built into a wilderness area and with the combination of subsistance/licensed hunting the whole area is shot out within 10 years. The First Nation's are upset, the Outfitters, the resident hunters, the conservation people and there is an election in 18 months and the government does nothing. Sound familar? We need minerals so everything has to go to lottery so we can bitch some more. Come up with the brilliant solution.

True that.

On top of it Corb Lund is a phoney. I know his roots. His ancestors would be less than proud.
