I think hunting with a shotgun will be my next deer hunt after hearing the success stories!

The 20 gauge likely 150 yard with the federal Barnes load or Remington accutip load. I took a young antlerless elk at 100 yards no problem with a savage 220f with the Barnes load. The slug opened up from half inch to 1” and up against hide opposite side on broadside shot. The 20 gauge where it’s at for this slug hunting and better ballistics etc.

it's not always bang flop on big whitetail bucks. I have shot them right in the boiler room , some flop as dead as dead can get , but being the magnificent creature they are , even with a well placed shot , they are very capable of making that 80 yard pure adrenailan bolt until they die on their feet , run into a tree or whatever. I'm sure many have experienced this . I shoot a 280 AI with Barnes 145 gr LRX which i find a very capable rifle/cartridge for most game.

Naw. It just made me chuckle.

Despite having a 300 REM magnum and a 7x300 Weatherby on hand, the old 257 Bob still gets the nod and honor of knocking down sheep, pronghorns, deer, elk, moose and buffalo for me.

Once you have sufficient killing power and a good bullet, what really matters is good shooting.
When you find the gun that fits and you shoot really well, use that one.

Here where I live it is all slug gun hunting for whitetail. Further north is rifle season. I tell all the guys here. Go with a 20 gauge. It’s more rifle like and much lower recoiling! All these guys are buying dedicated slug guns anyways.

Been very happy with this thread so far and it’s really cemented my midset that mild recoiling short action cartridges have earned their place and that I shouldn’t feel under gunned with my 6.5mm shooting controlled expansion bullets at appropriate velocities!

Trades I would interested in:
- Sightron rifle scopes, 4.5x14x42mm or 4x16x42mm
especially! with the HHR reticle. (no duplex pls.)
- older 6x fixed scopes with fine X or target dot.

10 years ago I never would have even thought about shooting a moose or an elk with a 25 cal bullet. Now after owning a 257 wby with a 110 accubond for a few years I wouldn’t hesitate.
