Y'all think this ram is legal or not
Dad and I are on our fifth season sheep hunting and we came across this guy and his younger buddies this year. We stared at him through the spotter for three hours waiting for a perfect profile view. This is the best picture I got of him (it's cropped). I think it is damn near perfect profile. Not the ram we were looking for. Next year he will be a shooter. I've had the spotter on rams that are clearly legal and that's what we were looking for.
My Dad is 68 and is still marching up those hills trying to keep up with his much younger son. Couldn't be more proud of him!!! He trains year round and I always tell him I'll hunt sheep with a old man but not a fat old man LOL...to keep him motivated

Congrats on you and your father putting everything you have into a hunt. That’s true success IMO.
Picture quality is not good enough to conclusively make the call. I would say he is 1/2 inch short. Also pretty thin.
I would be sweating bullets walking up to that ram, and again on registering him. Not worth tainting the experience by worrying about legality.
Good job on giving him the pass. Good luck next season.

X2, I bet he’d be 1/2” legal but don’t think I’d want to do that walk either

I'd be willing to bet he doesn't make it past the end of the season.

I think you guys did the right thing by passing on that one. If he's legal its just barely. I wouldn’t be surprised if Griz is right unfortunately and someone dumps him.

Can't say decisively from that pic to close to call. Leaning towards right on the line or just under. Young enough that next year he won't need much scope time to make him legal.
Cudos to your father, sure I hope I can still get around in the hills when I'm 68. That's just awesome!

Somebody will shoot that embarrassing little ram by the end of the year. Not many people have any kind of self control.

That's was a good call ..... that's way too close to risk. By an eyelash he could go either way but the photo is tough to be 100% sure.

I’d savour the hunt, however I wouldn’t pull the trigger on that Ram.

Pass, he's too short IMO. Glad to hear your old man is still climbing mountains at 68. Hope I can still do it at that age!

IMO that ram looks barely legal according to what is put forth in the regs. But it would definitely be short according to the new jig. The jig measures well forward of what is prescribed as a legal ram in the regulations.
On a different note, does your dad have a thick white moustache?

That's interesting... where does the new jig measure from? Honest question. As it is laid out in the regs there isn't much leeway. Anterior point of the base... pretty straight forward.

If he is almost legal now, he will likely be legal by the end of October.
The horns will be growing for a couple more months....

OL_JR search for the 'new sheep jig' thread. Later on in that thread I post in detail of the issues I had with it. PM me if you want further details. In short, where they measure and what is put forth as a standard are different things.

Agree it’s been ridiculous. It the Regs say eye not eye socket. The crown would lose that all day long in court. We have to stare at a 3D ram, in real life while it’s moving. They can’t just move the goalposts here.

This sheep I believe is legal. Maybe JUST legal but legal nonetheless. The new jig, when used correctly is actually a little more lenient than what you see in the field.
The photo is too grainy to tell on this ram 100%. But based on my experience he would be ok. Not a good ram to shoot. Too close for comfort.
The grid lines might not be perfect but give you a good reference point:

It's actually a very subjective measurement, some people don't realize that and different with the cape off. Not worth the risk.

For sure Dave. When we get a ram it will be the cherry on top of this whole sheep hunting experience. We have been on so many adventures scouting and hunting the mountains. The memories, pictures and videos we have from these adventures are truely priceless.

There’s horn under the hide, see the dark rim around the base, the actual line in front of the eyeball(not tear duct) angles back a bit, not straight down as gridded there, pretty decent attempt but without looking over the new jig thread again...I think that one squeaks...when they start to make the turn up as he is barely, and flare out a bit when looking head on these are indications that they are close and potentially legal
Also I think his nose needs to come a couple inches towards the camera for true perpendicular...can you please ask the ram to smarten up and give the right angle?
Despite thoughts on legality, it’s very close and would be nerve wracking, he’s still a year too young so good pass imo.

When I was out sheep hunting we saw what I assume is a father son combo out hunting. We saw them go up and down a bunch of mountains and run ridges all day. I don't think it was the most effective way of hunting. But we dubbed the old man 'Coffin Nails' because he was a beast on those hills. Would have been a funny coincidence if that was you.

That is a legal ram. Not by much at all but it is legal. And guarantee it will be shot by the end of this year if it is a busy area

If it is that close why would you pull the trigger. Not to be that guy but ... You put all that effort in to shoot a marginal sheep. I would totally pass.
