Dec 18th .... was a bright sunny day, Whites showed little interest until it clouded over at approx. 1:45 pm then the Dark colors with a P-Mag started to produce, did very well and went home at 2:30.

D.

See ....

Tip – Hook these on the back side, if you can’t put a P-Mag on your hook without messing it up, your hooks are either dull or too big for Whites.

Dec. 20th .... Sylvan Lake, it was a cloudy dull day in the morning then the sun came out in the late afternoon when I was at home filleting fish .... 4/5 on Y/O Candy Cane tipped with a P-Mag and my biggest was on the Brown/Orange W/W just below. There was very little interest in the Black W/W today which were in the same hole only 8-10" away from these two patterns.

What material and method do you guys use to make these wire worms? They are super shiny and look as if they glow. I would like to try make some?

I tied up 30 the other day. I went to Michaels and got myself some coloured wire and beads. Stopped by TFH and picked up 3 packages of hooks. It gets easier after the first few.

There are no set rules. Make what you think will work.

I went out to Gull last Saturday and had a few hits but no catches. I now have the confidence that I can tie these and will make more as I get time.

Yeah, great job man! Those first sets look very caddis (encased) style. As Zip has posted so many times, the whites have a good number of these in them. And live a lot of times too. I would think you get the whites attention and then drop those caddis imitations down to the bottom and they should eat it. I've watched many of those creepy caddis crawl across bottom when sight fishing whites.

Do you tip the wire worms with anything like a maggot? Or do most folks just fish it with bare hook?

I watched a big White vacuuming up the sand rubble bottom underneath my hole one afternoon on RR23, after catching a few & finding eggs in their gut I really would appreciate some feedback on your experience/success with the W/W fish egg cluster in the second pic left side. Very creative & novel idea ... tks for sharing.

J/J ... looks like a great assortment, look forward to some Whitefish pic's with them hanging out of they're top beak. As well, I've not made any in the light Blue pattern you produced, pls let us know if you have any success with them, they look like they may have potential.

Depending on the day, if the Whites aren't all that interested & in a neutral mood/activity a Pink Mag has made the difference in getting them to commit.

Strongly agree with Mr. Snap .... the Sylvan White's will be all over those creations if your fishin adjacent to any weed beds.

Cheers

I would agree, those Scud's look like excellent productive patterns .... well done. Depending on the day, I imagine those in a dark brown/black would be very productive on Sylvan/Gull, too.

I made up a bunch of hooks recently, hoping to try them this weekend. Mine are a bit different, as I made them like ones I have seen others use. Made with thread, some have heads on them, and some I used tiny wire. Then I coated them in a half dozen layers of acrylic (wife does nails, seemed like it would work well...). I think they will work well, after a couple dozen or so I got pretty good at them too. I have a couple pics of my first ones. Does anyone do something similar? or see an issue with the acrylic? They hardened up nice and hard, smooth and clear and seems to withstand water but are there any thoughts before I test them on some whites? Or is there something else you'd use? looks like a standard dry fly or bead head will work too.
Caught pretty much everything in the area other than a sturgeon, and whitefish so I hope I can find some whites at Gull. I've never found wire worms in a store like I was shown so we'll see!
edit*figured how to add pics...

I've never targeted whitefish while fishing, is this a fish that I can go after in the summer in some of the colder northern lakes? I'm really curious and have decided I need to broaden my fish species focus beyond the popular 3. (pike, perch, walleye).

Updated the thread Title for the 2019/2020 hard water season.

Looks like the mods removed this tread from the Fishing Discussion Sticky section, that's OK. Pleased to see the number of members sharing helpful tips and pic's of their Wire Worm creations, lots of excellent productive patterns.

Photobucket isn't sharing pic's again, plan on adding some new maybe old info with more pic's in the next few days.

Stay tuned.

Cheers

David

Since Photobucket stopped working, I believe it would be a good start to the season with a let’s get back to the basics with better pic’s. Trust this will be helpful for anyone considering getting into making wire worms and perhaps a refresher for others. I welcome the contribution from other members, including pic’s & sharing tips on what worked makes fishing for Whitefish more fun when you catch them on a wire worm that you made.

Wish everyone reading this thread all the success this fishin season.

Cheers

D.

2019/2020 Hard Water Season Thread update:

Find some premium quality hooks, they’re stronger, sharper and have a thinner diameter which makes it easier to get glass beads over the hook/barb. I prefer a #8 or #10 in a Nymph or Streamer they seem to work the best for size, wrapping & hook setting.

Wire comes in various diameters, I prefer 20 ga, it’s available at most fly fishing shops, Michaels the craft store & Walmart.

Start with a decent size hook & red bead or glow bead. I use a pair of locking forceps, needle nose pliers & wire cutters.

Thread the wire through the beads.

Clamp forceps & wrap the wire.

Trim front/back wire ends.

Red Pattern with Glow Bead completed.

Another example in Brass – thread wire through the bead & start wrapping the back end first then cut off the tag end.

Clamp forceps on hook shank & wrap wire.

Trim cut Front

Two of my Favorite Productive Patterns Completed, sharpen/hone hook point.

I fish 2 rods both with 2 W/W’s about 8” apart normally in 6 FOW or less.

Tie your top W/W first, start with eye facing up & leave approx. 12-14” tag line then tie the brightest colored W/W on last, it’s easier to see your W/W’s close to the bottom.

I use a Double Trilene Knot using 5 wraps then pull tight.

Important Tip: - To get your upper W/W to sit perfectly horizontal with the hook facing up like the pic ..... “Loop” the tag end back through the hook eye and down, then pull tight.

Like This.

If you left 12-14” of tag line, you have plenty of line to tie the second W/W at least 8-12” from the first one, start with hook eye facing up.

Tie your knot, I use 5-6 wraps before I pull line tight and remember to thread the line back down through the eye before you trim & it will sit perfectly horizontal.

Both Rods Wired Up & Ready for Opening day.

Trust this was helpful.

Just a note on wireworms. When fishing for whites in October on open water the scuds are immature and not fully grown so a wireworm hook should be smaller with size 10 or 12 or even as small as size 16. As the winter progresses the scuds grow to full size so a woreworm can be made on a bigger hook. size 8 or 6.

This is a pigeon lake scud. Hyalella azteca. 3 to 8 mm (1/16" to 5/16") when grown. Imitate it.

Good info ..... I've seen somewhat similar scuds in Sylvan Whites after my autopsy, some were still twitching.
