Ram River/Hummingbird Creek **PIC HEAVY**
Spent two days fishing the ram were the hummingbird joins as well as fishing the hummingbird. Between the three of us over a 100 fish were caught. First day they would hit almost any dry fly but a orange stimmie was the best. Next day nymphs were the better producers.

It was a adventure alright! My 800 dollar Canon SLR lives no more after I bent down to scoop up a fish.

That's a great spot to fish, been there many times. You should hike up the ram, and cross it keep going to the Ranger Creek confluence and then fish up the Ranger, there are some incredible sized cuts up in that part of the drainage.

what is the best way to get up there (driving)? how long is the hike in? are there good spots to camp near the stream?

We camped near the staging area by Hummingbird creek. We were camped right by the ram river but it was the last spot. There were lots of people up there but thankfully very very few of them were fishing or else the river would of been a zoo. As far as hiking goes you can fish the river right off the road and start catching but the farther you hike and the more remote you go the better the fishing is for bigger ones. We drove to nordegg then went south down the forestry trunk road. I don't know if that was the best way or not. I am sure there are more ways you can go and different people on here who could assist with getting there fastest.

Where you starting from? Hit the Trunk road and the road to Humming Bird is about 2.5 KM north of the Ram where is crosses the trunk road. Head west about 5 or so Klicks to the staging yard. Follow the Ram South and west to the Ranger Valley, you have to cross the HB and the Ram further up, maybe 6-8 KM. If you watch you will see where the Ranger joins the Ram, if you follow the Ram you will eventually come to the glacier, but that is a considerable hike. If you follow the Ranger, you will get yourself in to Banff. But that is a good long hike as well. If you are in the Ranger Valley and paying attention, you will find the trail to Lost Guide Lake, a very beautiful place and full of cutthroats.

I would like to thank everyone in this thread for the great info on hummingbird creek. I took my sons (5 & 7) there to fly fish. They have been practicing their casting for months and this week they put it into practice. They pulled in 5 cutts in the space of 2 hrs, there were many small willing cutts but they also each pulled in one over 12 inches. It was a great experience for them and their father. Can't thank you enough for all the information!
As I've heard many times here "some spend their life looking for a fishing partner, I'm training mine!"

Dumb question as I haven't hit that area yet, but how crowded is the campground? Coming down early on a Friday in August to spend week camping/fly fishing (actually RVing is the term my wife uses :-)

Been there once and in August campground is quiet and not many users. The staging area up the hummingbird is busy busy with people camped and/or parked up the whole last half of the road.

Great thread! I have hiked in to Lost Guide Lake once and I can't wait to go back. I do recall being very, very tired by the time we made it there though haha! Beautiful country..
