Default Cheap stuff that works

We all know good gear is expensive but we also all know there is good budget gear or inexpensive hacks that can be as good or better than store bought expensive gear/ equipment.

List your favorite cheap hunting items you love or that just plain work.

I'll start off with my two favorites

Wrangler outdoor performance pants.
Affordable hiking/ hunting pants that just plain work.
Usually find them at Wal-Mart for under 30$

2 sets of 3 chain links attached ( simply cut 3 links off a full chain)
Using 550 para and 2 set ( of three links) you can make a quick and light 3x block and tackle that can make lifting game, pulling downed trees ECT simple and easy for one person.
Simply attach center link of 1st set to object to be moved and center link of 2nd set to overhead branch or solid anchor point. Then run the 550cord through the other two links on both sets just as you would a traditional block and tackle and pull. Mechanical advantage will help you pull/ lift crazy heavy loads.

I really like the outdoor edge replaceable blade knives and just a simple 5$ tarp for processing game. Tarp gives me someplace clean to set quarters down and the knife does a great job of taking apart harvested animals.

Eddie Bauer Guide Pro insulated pants. Good pockets, warm, wind resistant, water resistant, stretchy for fat bellies, moderately priced.

Default Cheap stuff

I use a cheap plastic utility knife for most of my skinning and field work. One that has the blades that slide out. Just snap the tip off when it gets dull and slide out more blade. Always razor sharp. Buy a pack of 50 blades and throw them in your pack. I always laugh when I see somebody pull out an expensive knife. The cheap utility knife is all you need and never needs sharpening.

What do you guys insist on wearing synthetics hunting?? The critters hear you from 100m or more some times.

Wool..... value village... wool wool wool wool

Shirts
Sweaters
Socks
Headgear

All less than $15 bucks each.

I’m even finding merino wool layer shirts as well there these days.

Also... West German army wool Surplus military pants... suspenders... $40

Works from +5 to -30 weather... wind proof

Wool works in wet... if it’s raining that hard to soak wool... you probably should be by a fire.

Backup optics if your breaks and cans afford it...(like mine did) .... barskas... less than 100 for 10x42.... they work well enough.

303 surplus Enfield for a backup rifle... works excellent to 200 yards. $150.00

10’ x 12’ tarp... is your tent or sleeping bag.

Garbage bag in your pack for rainwear. Poke your head and arms through as you head back to the truck.

But wool..... wool wool wool man. Value village is a friggin gold mine!!!

Value Village is a for profit corporation , masquerading as a charity, local thrift stores are a better option and cheaper.

Where do you buy the west German wool pants? Mine cratered awhile ago.

Value village is indeed a for profit company but it’s in my list of places to stop.

Last winter ingot a full length wool jacket with hood. It’s amazing. Quiet, warm...did I mention quiet?

I bought by down sleeping bag at VV, cost me um... was it $12.00 or was it $18.00? Can’t remember but I went online when I got home and it was $550.00. Mine was brand new, I don’t think it had ever been used.

Anyway the point is, people buy gear and eventually get rid of it. Thrift stores are indeed treasure troves.

I’ve used this pocket stove on numerous fishing/hunting trips over the past 3 seasons. It’s simple and its never let me down, and for $20 you can’t go wrong. Hell, even the click igniter still works:

Mora knives. I make knives yet I still keep a couple Mora blades in the garage and behind the seat of the truck.

Another great piece of kit is the Brit DPM SAS/RMC smock, sprayed with Scotch Guard.

-Grohman knife seconds. 1/2 off retail and very minor issues

Merino wool shirts at costco, 100% merino shirts for 20.00 not as durable as the blends but they are amazing. I have a closet full of them.

Big Bill wool clothing. Not as cheap as thrift stores or mil-surp but compared to other quality new gear its cheap

Hockey tape on rattling zipper pulls

I have some warmer options, but for beating around in the fall before it gets too cold these are really good and pretty cheap for what you get: https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/k...2668p.html#srp

Yup they’re good boots. I wish ...really wish they’d use wool felt liners instead of the crappy ones they do.

If the quarters are skinned, then placing them on a tarp is not a good practice.
Meat should only contact food grade material.

That’s actually true p, some of the colours on tarps can leach into the meat.

A piece of heavy duty 4x8 poly works well for skidding out critters and it is not coloured , also doubles as a cover if you get caught in a downpour!

I love those knives. I just got one from Canadian Tire that is a fixed blade and takes either the 3 1/2 or 5 inch blades. The 5" for boning& filleting, the 3 1/2 " for skinning etc.

x2 on the scalpel handle and blades (more for caping). I also caring a simple 3 inch paring knife with a cheap sharpener. does everything you need. I also like a cheap next to skin glove, just for a little protection on my hands. Vet wrap to wrap anything up and wrap the base of the rattling horns. Zip ties (Never know what you can use them for.

They work great, but don't forget a small disposable water bottle for used blades. Buddy got a pretty severe gash looking for shell casings in the long stuff. Couldn't even see it. Great knives though

Re-using wheat flour in your wind checker works great

Re-use cheese cloth (wash in washing machine)

But the cheapest thing I've ever done was buying good quality gear.

Dollar store rain poncho. Dollar store painting drop sheet and a roll of string for a quick overhead rain cover.
Dryer lint, fine steel wool, some wax and a 9 volt battery. The 9 volt starts the steel wool on fire and add the lint and wax to get a blazing fire going quickly(even on the wet coast).
