Default shop suggestions and approximate price to get a car door painted.

what shop to use and any idea of cost. I have a damaged door and it's cheaper to get a replacement than to fix the door.

Depends on the vehicle and your location.

Replacing one door will usually mean blending the color to the next panels to
color match unless your vehicle is black. Sometimes you can find a same color used door shell. Some body shops will still butt match a panel but I bet they wash their hands of getting a true match.

Bet you will hit $800 to $1000.00 bucks pretty quick in paint costs to spray a new door inside & out and to blend into the adjacent panels.

I am in Edmonton. Not to worried about a perfect colour match as it's quite an old vehicle.

When it comes to body shops I will always recommend Baker Boyz Designs and Special FX Autobody in Edmonton, its not the cheapest around but the quality of Shane's work is top notch. He stands behind is work as well.

There are many factors that effect the price. One of the most overlooked is the cost of the paint itself. That varies greatly depending on the color. Some colors can require 6,7,8 or more coats to properly obtain the correct color depth. Some color codes require a basecoat followed by a transparent tinted pearlescent coat. The amount of pearls in the paint drastically effect the cost. The base material comes into play when selecting the primer and required additives to the paint. If its plastic parts its a good idea to add a plasticizer to the paint to help prevent flaking. That also effects the drying time and application window. With modern paints it is not impossible for a quart to cost $1200. When it comes to black, there is no such thing as straight black anymore. There is midnight black, deep black, hotrod black, dodge black, ford black ext.

Herbers Auto. I just got a quote to replace the right front quarter panel on a 4runner, and paint it, the right door, hood, left front fender and drivers door. All in $2,500. To replace and paint just the right fender (parts cost $250) and blend/paint the right passenger door was 1,700. I have had Herbers do a lot of work on vehicles over the years and they have always done first class work.

If you just want color on a new part as it is an older vehicle, it shouldn't cost too much. Herbers, Boyds, Carstar shops all do good work for a good price. Lots of smaller shops that may do it cheaper but you would have to google them.

I would look for one the same color at a wrecker if you do not care about a match. Otherwise a door usually pays 4.0 hours or so to refinish inside and out.
Blending both ways would be another1.0
Realistically you are looking at 5 hours refinsh labour.
On top of that there will be body labor to remove and replace the door. Usually another 3.5-4.0 hours.
There will also be Remove and install time for trim on the plend panels ( doorhandle, belt moulding, mudflaps ect) That would usually be another 1.0-2.0 hours
You will be looking at 10-12 hours minimum labor to fix properly.

If it doesn't have to be perfect, you could always get them to scan the color of the existing door, put it in aerosol cans, and just spray bomb it yourself. Obviously it isn't going to look as good (heck, maybe it will, I don't know your skills) but it will cost alot less.
