I couldn't upload a trail cam vid. But I did see that Trapping Inc. episode and thought that was a very good segment.

I think that it'd be safe to say that death was instantaneous. There's a video on the Trapping Inc facebook page that someone took of an ermine getting caught that showed how fast those traps work. Bang-dead.

Incredible actually. Faster then even I thought it would be.

As a non trapper who loves to hear about what you guys do out there on the lines, that was a cool glimpse into your world. I see Trapping Inc facebook page is a closed group, is it only for licensed trappers to join?

No, it's for everybody interested in the industry. But there are many photos and some videos so it is kept as a closed group. Just like the page and Rich will except you. Helps if you have some pictures of dead stuff on your Facebook, trying to keep the antis out I suspect.

haha! I've been outed as a Facebook creeper! I do have to go to peoples pages to see if there is some connection to the wild. Twice now I've asked young ladies if they knew what page they were trying to join. Both times they were joining the page for their Dad's! One of these Dads hold a neighboring line to mine. Small world!
Thanks Jeff.

Awesome video Tork!

I watched a beaver swim into one of my old style 330 one time.
I was about 100 yards away and even though I ran to the set the beaver showed no signs of life when I got there.

I caught a Wolverine in a old school 220 back in the 90s, from the sign it appeared as though it never knew what hit it. There was no sign of any movement after the trap triggered.
These new traps are scary. At least twice as powerful as the traps I used back in the day.

Something I was wondering about. The trap and catch stayed in the box.
Is that the way that set is supposed to work?
I made my own boxes and I designed them so that the trap would fall free of the box when it triggered.
I'd nail the box to the tree, as close to a large branch as possible. Then I'd wire the toggle chain as far out on that branch as possible.
That way when the trap triggered the trap and catch would swing out away from the tree, laving the catch hanging free of everything.

This was done to reduce damage from Shrews and birds and it helped quiet a lot.

I understand that with today's standard for checking, such damage is not so much of an issue, but I would think that getting the catch away from the tree would still be a good idea, if nothing else, to reduce the possibility of pine pitch getting in the fur.

Just wondering if that is the way it was supposed to work.

This set up was designed to work just how it did. I use plastic boxes because the bear population is really high and I don't like taking the boxes down every year. I wire the back springs to the box so when the trap fires it stays right where it was set. The marten or fisher hangs about 4 inches off the tree so the pine pitch isn't an issue. In areas with lots of squirrels I set it up to hang away from the tree on a branch. On average I end up with one damaged per year from something.
I used to run all horizontal log sets but my bird (whiskey jacks ) bycatch was far to high in. I put spruce branches across the fronts and the birds just pushed through anyway and kept getting caught. After switching to this style I've only caught one in the last three years.

I thought there might be a reason it worked that way.

Up here Shrews are a major problem thus the need to get the catch as far from the tree as possible. But, I'm thinking that 4" might be enough to do the job.
I wish I had the opportunity to try those boxes in this environment.
Back in the day we had no such option. We had no choice but to make our own boxes.
Most of the trappers I know used a box on a near horizontal pole. I found the box on the tree trunk worked better for me, in large part due to the almost zero bird problems with this box setup. The others did have some issues with birds.

We also found a way to reduce the Shrew problem somewhat. It was simple enough, although perhaps a bit extreme. We simply placed a empty beer bottle at the base of the tree, laying on it's side, with a slight upward angle. It was baited with a bit of beaver meat, dropped to the bottom of it.
The shrews would climb in for the bait but were unable to climb out.
