Default Electric log splitters

Planning on being more self reliantand , set my shop up for wood heating, I'm looking at electric log splitters. But I've always been leary of them, power wise, compared to a bigger set up Opinions ?

I was checking out log splitters a couple of months ago and came across this. Everything I found out after pretty much confirms what is in this article.

I just picked up a 20ton champion from cam tire. (Gas engine).
I had a bunch of 24-28” spruce that would take me 30 mins to split with a maul.
Splitter Goes through them like butter. Slows down for the knots a bit but cuts right through them. Couldn’t be happier so far.

I was contemplating a splitter purchase with Canadian Tire money but then I noticed that full-size units can be rented. For a thing used once every year or three I'd much rather rent than have to store one of the blasted things.

I bought a yardworks on sale from Canadian tire last year and it has been amazing. Electric 9 ton and I wouldn’t go back to a gas one if you gave it to me. So nice not having to listen to a gas engine roaring away beside you all day, nice and quiet when it’s pushing a log through and then silence when you let off and it returns until you start splitting the next one. Way more than enough power for even the most knotty fir, can’t reccomend the electric enough.

I have one of the Yardworks models from CT and have had it for maybe 10 years or so. We cut a lot of wood and this little thing has split many a chord of wood for us.

The only thing to remember it is electric and kind of tabletop so the diameter of your trees is important. Don't try to be Paul Bunyan and cut down the biggest trees in the forest or it wont split them.

Inherited some big stumps from my FIL neighbor and had to go rent a big one as it just grunted and hardly touched them.
Saying all that one of the best investments my FIL made and now it sits in my garage.

Forget the extremely slow traditional splitter and step into a Kinetic for not much more and its 10X faster

Bought the electric splitter and stand from Princess Auto when it was on sale about 3 years ago. Not overly quick compared to when i swung an axe when i was a kid growing up, but dang sight easier on my back these days.

On my acreage I mostly have relatively skinny poplar that is anywhere from 2 to 6" diameter. And I really only split the bigger stuff just prior to burning or for kindling. Have easily split bigger stuff up to around 12" when i cut down some of the bigger trees.

Electric splitter great if you have lots of time and small wood. Large birch or spruce trees sometimes need 25 ton splitter to get through noted blocks.

I used to rent a 25 ton splitter for $80.00 a day and work like a dog to get all the work done. Now a buddy lent me his 25 ton Champion for a couple of weeks and I could work at normal pace. Price- 48 pilsner and he said I overpaid.

I have a 5 ton Princess Auto electric. I normally only split green wood (easier to split than seasoned). Usually set it up on a tailgate and it will split logs as large as I'm able to lift up onto it. Good for logs up to 20" in length. Not the quickest ram but works well. Ram is also adjustable. Got it on sale for around $200.00. I'd buy another one no question if I had to.

I have an electric 5 ton from CT and it works great.

Yes you can race me with a splitting maul, but after 10 minutes, I'm still pushing through wood at a good pace.

Knotty stuff slows it down but it does pop it.

Thank Oster 777

There is a guy on Kijiji that rents for $30/day, $25 for A/O members
(me)

I love these, would rather have gas, but more maintenance and the tires on the cheaper ones aren't really meant for running all over the city.
The electric fits in mini vans, suv's and hatchbacks

This. I bought a 7 ton unit this summer and run it on my Honda 2000watt inverter generator. My daughters have split about 12 chords so far of spruce and poplar up to 18” without any issues. Sometimes it takes a couple whacks, but still much faster than a hydraulic.

Sorry I couldn't tell you, I'm not sure.

Saw the one in my link at a trade show, just WOW! It just rockets through the wood.

Very impressive splitter.

I burn 6 cord of hardwood per year I always used a electric splitter with not much trouble the bigger knotty blocks I would start the split with my saw now I have both only difference is the 20 ton is faster . For the price you really can't go wrong
