Default Daughters first mule deer buck

After a week of trying to find the not so plentiful outside base cow elk the daughter and I figured we would go for a day of deer hunting as she was drawn for mule buck. We had previously put out trial cams for 3 months on the leased land we were targeting. After checking them we found pictures of 3 decent bucks and the rest were cattle. So we headed out with some what of an idea of where to start. We leave the house around 7am as the alarm got set for 530pm instead of 530am, then get to Tim hortons only to realize the daughter forgot her wallet and we hadn’t boughten tag yet (talk about a morning cluster). So we get wallet and go buy tag and make our 1 hour drive to spot we were going to hunt. We see a few does grazing and a single deer bedded on a side hill to far to tell if it was a buck. We decided to check another spot then come back. We found nothing, so we go for a walk to look in a few valleys. We spot a few deer on the distant side hill at the other side of the quarter. So we head back to the truck and drive around to a closer access point on top of the hill. As we arrive a decent 4 point is spotted 60 yrds away. But runs down the draw before we get organized. We take a walk to the edge and see the buck trotting away couple hundred yrds ( to hard a shot for daughters ability) so we let it walk. We look around and spot a few does coming out of another draw at 300 yrds and wait to see if a buck follows. Sure enough a different 4 point is hit on their tail. To tough a shot again. We head back to the truck and go in the direction the deer headed. We stop at a well head to look around, and spot two does beaded in the rose bush patch. I tell the daughter let’s go take a closer look cause you never know. We circle around down wind with in 80yrds of the deer when a third doe jumps up. No bucks though, as we turn around to head back to truck I see horns in the rose bush 30yrds away. I say get down there’s the buck! So we lay down set up the bipod and wait. All we san see is horns nothing else, some wait for what felt like an eternity for the buck to stand so we could get a shot off. But he would not move(still like a statue) so we shuffled over a bit to see if there was a lane in the bush patch. Just then he gets up and bolts over the hill and gone.we pick up are hearts off the ground and head back to the truck. It’s 12:00 by this time and we have to start heading home by 1:00, so we figure let’s go back to the spot we seen deer first thing then head home. So we go back to the spot and see a doe that’s a good sign. We park truck and head to the hill top to look over the draw area. Low and behold the buck we just seen was there with his three does. I tell the daughter to get ready. So she sets up the bipod and chambers a round. The buck runs so I let out a grunt and he stops 180yrds broad side so I say shoot. Bang! goes the 30-06, the buck jumps and runs 30 yrds before pulling up. After a couple hoots and hollers and hi-fives we head down to the buck. He’s a good one and as we start guting him I find out she made a awesome **** right in the heart. Couldn’t be prouder.

Thanks for sharing that. Great work girl !

I’m a P9 mule deer and would be happy to get a deer like that.

Good job dad, one of my best memories is also one of my girls taking her first wt buck with a heart shot at 268 yards. She got to look at it coming for 15 minutes, so lots of time to settle down on the shooting sticks. Love it, good for both of you!

Congratulations to you and your daughter! I can only imagine how overjoyed you must feel at having that experience with her. I personally can not wait until it’s my little girl in a similar picture. Keep at it, you’re doing things right.
