Bucktails are nice too, good and tough.

One thing I have noticed in creating my own flies, is that a stinger hook seems to produce more hookups.

Seem to get less short strikes or tail grabs.

Just my opinion.

X2....I like the fight but I don't like to overplay the fish post spawn....a prolonged fight can literally kill them.

Having a decent 7-9wt will still allow for a great fight but is beefy enough to land the fish in good time.

True, also I find for the size of some of the flies you need an 8at for casting them most effectively or maybe it's because I'm new to fly fishing haha

Been fishing coal lake the last few days with the fly rod for pike and suckers, been having the time of my life! Went through ten of my own flies. Heavy duty little pieces of work but when you're getting a fish on every cast, it's not hard for them to get absolutely destroyed. I don't use any particular model or style for tying streamers. Start off with a straight long shank hook, wire wrap it for a little added weight, tie on a few pieces of marabou.( Pinks been my best bet but green has been deadly too.) then flip it over and give it a pinch of tinsel flash. Super easy and absolute dynamite!
