Default Pike fly fishing

Just wondering if I'm the only odd ball on here that fly fishes for pike?

What are your favourite pike flies?

Default Rabbit Fur and Chartreuse

I was a fly in fishing guide for a couple summers in Northern Sask. and we had many fly fishermen that all they wanted to do was sight fish for big pike. The big colour that worked up there was Chartreuse. Nothing like seeing the water boil when a 40"+ pike goes for the fly.

Just went out yesterday, caught 50+ between 3 guys. Great day. Used same fly all day. Pike loved it.

My fly:
Yellow lead eyes
Chartreuse rabbit
Yellow crystal flash
Extra large pearl flash.
Single stinger hook

Simple tie.
1. Attach stinger to forward hook
2. Crystal flash
3. Long strip of rabbit to middle of forward hook
4. Wrap cross cut rabbit about 4 wrap forward.
5. One strip of pearl on each side
6. Add your fav eyes.

I haven't used it yet but got an 8 wt for pike and did some research on leader material and was very impressed with this video on knot 2 kinky wire.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgBx0vjr6mg

I used 35 lb knot 2 kinky wire and 25 lb cross-lok snap/swivel and was very impressed with the result. I can't wait to get out and try it one of these days. Here are pictures of the leader, very neat and should be strong. Just me being picky but I wish the knot from leader to wire was straight instead of having a slight kink but if I play around might be able to find a better one.

The nice thing about that swivel is how small it is, big enough for flies but small enough it even fits through rod guides and is light. That is why I bought the 25 lb instead of something bigger. I used the swivel so that I am not wasting expensive titanium wire every time I want to change flies.

I sometimes use an large elk hair mouse on the surface for pike in spring. Size 4 or 6 hooks.
I also use the mouse using a spincast rod and reel with a 6 ft. leader and clear float.

Google up Albright Knot,,,,, works well in connecting wire to mono.

Anchovie style flies, poppers, double bunnies( red white, chartreuse/yellow or white), large clousers same colors. Pike on the fly is addicting nothing like the rush you get when you see the explosion of water.

X2

Also will not kink, can use one all season.

Much lighter than steel, so makes it easier to cast.

I've been using Tyger wire, easy to tie on and change flies, and I use some very small 50lb (?) swivels on the leader end.
Chartreuse deceivers and clousers work great for me.

Tried lots of leaders over the years, settle on standard 40lb Mason for the leader on the advice from a fella named Bruce Richards .

I went out two nights ago with my kids. I was fly fishing, they were casting spoons and jigging. I caught nine and they caught 0. Why would I fish for pike any other way. I was using yellow and green combination streamers, about a two foot steel leader on the tip of 8 feet of flourocarbon, both tied on with albright knots. They are smooth knots that run through the guides nice.

Might be time to start the kids on fly fishing.

Was out Saturday, caught 2 and missed another 2. For flies go BIG and flashy. A 18 inch pike will smash an 8 inch streamer anyday. Of course throwing bugs that big will be working casting all day haha

Just like this one....look how long the fly is compared to the fish, the tail of the fly is black and touching the reel.

Most people use 8 or 9 and have seen guys use as light as 6 although you probably only want to do that if you know the lake doesn't have big fish in it.

The biggest reason I have found for using my 9 is casting and not actually fighting the fish haha but I fish a lake when 25" is a monster

You could land the new provincial record with a six weight easily but you may have difficulty casting the fly to it. The size and weight of the fly are a much bigger factor when determining what weight of rod you will use rather than the size of fish you are casting to. 8 or 9 for big pike flies would be ideal.

Caught tons of Walleye and pike on this beauty! Oh, and I use a 5wt....that said I would never want to land a huge one or I'd be in trouble.
I may pick up a higher wt just for stuff like this.
