Default great waste of time

Well I had a boring type weekend ahead of me . Kids were stayin home with mom . so I figured i had some time to waste why not chuck a bug or two down at hermitage. even though they most likely hadnt stocked it well after 5he second cast I was suprised to see they had ....so for most of the day I walked around the pond catching fish after fish ...thought some of you might like to know .

I was hoping to get out somewhere this weekend myself. No such luck though, looks like you had a fun day!

Nice to see they did not winter kill. Try and make some time out there myself and dust off my flyrod. Thanks for the update. Maybe see you there sometime.

What flies were working for you? I'm just getting into fly fishing, and was hoping to practice at Hermitage or Cardiff.

I don't think you got an exact answer. I had luck with black Woolley buggers, San Juan worms ( nothing fancy basically red wire wrapped on a hook),and damsel nymphs in the summer months at Hermitage. I find lots of the fish there on the edge of the weeds less than 10 feet from shore.

Add elk hair caddis ,griffiths gnat ,and pheasent tail or hare ear nymphs to the list and you would be set for most pothole lakes.

Good luck.

Cool, thanks guys. One more question if I may... are you using indicators with the wet flies or do you find they're unnecessary?

Hermitage is in the east end of Edmonton, just off the Yellowhead. Map is here:

I figured this might be the case. I was looking at stocking reports from previous years, and it looks like it's typically restocked annually around this time.

Cardiff has winterkilled every year for the past 4 years. No perch or bigger rainbows left. I live very close and fish it regularly. Still a decent place to work off the rust on my fly casting, but don't expect anything bigger than this years stock.

Really to bad cause it used to have awesome perch and some decent rainbows. Good candidate for an aerator.

Just thought I'd give you guys an update... I went out to Hermitage for a couple of hours yesterday evening and caught my first and second ever fish on a fly rod. The second one was a baby and I practically hauled it onto the bank when I set the hook. Caught them both on a nymph about 12 - 18 inches under an indicator... not sure if that was too much or not enough, but it seemed to do ok. I had a bit of a lousy spot too - it was crowded when I got there, but as I was leaving I saw tons of fish rising near the dock.

I also learned that my casting still sucks () and that you need to pick up the slack in the line and set the hook as soon as your indicator wobbles... those rainbows were crafty.

Thanks all for your help and advice in this thread.

Where did you cast from? The dock? I got skunked for a few hours the other day. It was my first time on the fly rod, so my casting is pretty horrible as well.

I actually had to walk around to the other side of the island to find a spot. I'm not sure how great the dock is if you have a fly setup (especially if you're a beginner like me) since there won't be as much room for you to cast. But I was hooking the fish less than 20 feet from shore, so you don't really need to cast all that far.

Pleeeease tell me someone else from this board was at hermitage after 4pm today and saw the X rated spectacle that I saw.

No joke, not a word of a lie; I saw a guy taking dirty pictures of three pretty decent looking girls to the right of the dock. I couldn't believe it and I know no one will believe me unless someone vouches for it on here.

I can't believe that's my first post on this board, but there it is.

Welcome to the forums.
Taking a pic honestly never crossed my mind, probably because my phone is hooped, that and I didn't feel like getting beat up, haha. It was just too weird, I couldn't think straight. There was a guy with them doing one armed push-ups and posing for the camera too. I guess it's 'tarps optional' for everyone down there now.
