Rdr ice breakup?
Figured i would ask you fishing folks.
When do you expect the ice to begin breaking up on the red deer river?
Never much paid attention to dates in years past.
Need to drive a boat up to glennifer dam from red deer, cant tow it.
Thanks fella's.

good luck, hope your boat can jump water falls or small enough to portage. I've only experienced a small section of that river between Red deer and Glennifer, it wasn't fun.

What are you talking about? The RDR is about as gentle a river as you can get. There are no ledges or falls or any portage points.
This weather in the next couple weeks should speed everything right up.

take your boat about 3 km downstream from Glennifer dam and let me know how you make out. http://youtu.be/OhsJuZDBhoE
the beginning of this video is as far as you'll get from the dam until you feel like jumping a 3' drop
the slow mo part is the only way to pass that section of river, the right side is 6" of water

That looks quite smooth compared to the rivers in bc i would take this boat down.
Its only an 11 footer with a small 7hp outboard. Any shallow spots i can walk it through.
So mid march it should be clear? Or at least pass able?

Man thats a cake walk compared to some of the stuff ive gone over in my buddies 2 seater! Lol. Pretty standard run for any Jet, little bit of skinny water to keep it interesting

It should be, but my buddy tried it early season and seem to recall he ran into ice, might have been early April before he did any good distance from RD section up. I will message him in the morning

I drift the section below the dam, to Innisfail, from may long to the end of season. There is no 3foot drop.
And as you can see from the vid, the boat hardly moved. Guys run that river constantly in their river boats. It's a pain in the arse, how many boats are running that river up there when I am trying to cast to rising snouts...

With only a 7hp you could be there a while, might have to take an overnight bag

Talked to him, it was late april early may when he was running it.. Thought it was earlier. Good luck anyway! It was a pretty mild winter with light snow, so probably minimal ice and pretty low
