Default Crawling valley

How has crawling pike been lately with all this heat? Thinking of taking some visiting family there this week. First timers when it comes to pike.

Was there last night, fishing isn't bad, water temp around 73 F. I found it to be slower than usual but still caught fish.

Thank you. Hopefully we can find a number of them. Not really concerned about size on this trip.

We had a decent day yesterday. Couldn’t find aggressive pike but found a number of 5 pound Wally. 32’-42’. Bottom bouncing.

You must have been almost at max depth in the middle lol. Worms, spinners, never mind if you don't want to say. Must have had about 3oz weight. Gonna wait till after the weekend warriors leave to go back out. Last time out had something big that broke one of my trebles off and another that just took my pricy blue and white deep diver Rapala Lures. That would be the second one of same size and color. Here I come fishin' hole.

Pike rigs with big bait. Broke a basspro rod (never again) on a 13”” Wally. 3oz weights. Max depth was 50’. I use a trolling plate and work at about 1.5-2.0 mph

Plus 30 degree weather fishing in those depths equals dead fish

Please dont fish that deep! Few will survive those depths even if it looks like they swam away.

Wouldn’t there be dead walleye floating around and accumulating on the shoreline?

The surface of CV must be littered with dead wally then. (The other 5 boats were catching far more than I.)
Maybe they sink instead of float when they die?
Maybe they float up at night and are picked by all the birds by sunrise?
Gotta say that in the last 10 years, I don't think I've seen more than a couple of floating pike and no floating wally. Perhaps they do sink? Dunno

Regardless....y'all that like to assume....keep assuming. Makes for good entertainment for the rest of us.

Google barotrauma in walleye...it is real...

https://gf.nd.gov/wildlife-notes/barotrauma

seems a bit reckless to fish C&R waters below around 30 feet or so knowing what you could be doing to the fish.

It is or was recommended to fish in 23 m or less in the fishing regulations. It was there for a reason. Not sure if it is still in there with all the additional info on prussian carp though.

Not all die immediately look up delayed mortality.

50 fow adds up to dead walleye period. Unless you know how to fizz the fish which very few do the odds are almost 100% that fish you released is gonna die

Please do not fish walleye at the depth.

Sorry to say ragweed but from what I have read and what they say here is the reason I don't fish for walleye that deep. 20-25 ft max. I do prefer shallower, mornings and evening time but will troll a diver about 18ft. A pelican of any size will take a good size fish and sh!!t hawks will pick em apart. Just try not to go that deep especially knowing you can't keep any walleye or pike. I will be coming out soon to have some fun.

Not trying to add to the conflict but I can attest to the fact that walleye DO die coming up too fast out of the deep because I killed one by ACCIDENT. We were fishing a steep drop off and the strong wind kept pushing my boat off the shallow into the deep. My old iPilot spotlock couldn't keep up to the wind (the new one is much better). I pulled a nice big walleye up and it was looked like an over-inflated rugby ball. The eyeballs were like golf ball size. I felt terrible. Spent a lot of time trying to revive it. We even drove the boat slowly around with me hanging over the side of the boat holding the fish trying to get water over it's gills. Unfortunately, it didn't work so I tagged it and kept it. I didn't want to keep a walleye that big but had to. It was an accident and only happened once so don't lynch me guys! Concidentally, there were COs on the water and they watched me hang over the side of the boat, and thought I was drunk and throwing up so they came over expecting to give me a ticket for drinking in the boat. They checked the walleye with the tag and moved on. Learned my lesson, now always watching what depth I'm pulling walleye out of.

Take 20 seconds out of your day of fishing and type 2 words in google. Barotrauma Walleye.

Don't think anyone was trying to provide you with entertainment regarding this topic, but instead just helping to educate.

This might be a stupid question, but why does this not seem to affect fish like lake trout?

Lakers can actually self regulate their swim bladders… they will ‘burp’ out expanded air and be able to right themselves. Walleye do not have this ability.

Don’t be sorry to say that at all. I appreciate the sharing of experience and knowledge.

30' is definitely the max I would ever fish for them. After that their eyes pop out and puff up like a balloon, stomach will also come out of there mouth. Some are so messed up they are dead by the time they get to the surface, others will swim away but the barotrauma will eventually kill them. Its a similar thing that happens to people when they come up to fast while scuba diving.

I think there are some fish stories being told here if you were down in 50' and not having any of this happen.
