Default Cheap Hide Drying Salt?

Where do you guys get your cheap salt for drying hides?
I'm in Edmonton and can't seem to locate anywhere to buy anything larger than 1 pound packs of salt. Doesn't have to be anything fancy.

Thanks

the salt you want is "high grade granulated salt" 20kg bags. best price by FAR is UFA. last few bags I purchased were about 8$ a piece.

The best drying salt is fine grain, non-iodized salt. Feed salt comes in large bags really cheap at feed and farm supplies all over the country. Apply one coat, let sit 24 hours, shake off, re-salt. The fine grain removes water and kills bacteria better and gives much better coverage on the hide.

You may already know this but since you are asking where to find salt cheap, thought it might not hurt to mention. Remember before you salt he hide, to remove 100% of all meat from the skin. Any meat you leave on and salt will be almost impossible to get off later and the skin under the meat won't get cured so the hair will slip. Also remember that a salted hide is much harder to freeze. If you are going to freeze the hide you are much better off not salting it if you can get it into the freezer within a day or two. If you freeze a salted hide make sure the freezer is cranked to its coldest setting, -15F or better is great.

Also, if you haven't turned the lips, eyes and paws you need to get it to the taxidermist right away so he can get this done or your mount will suffer. It is well worth watching a couple of videos on how to tun and scrape a hide properly if you want the best mount possible.

Best of luck hunting.
