Default Netting Fish

So I saw some kids today in a side channel off of the bow river in Calgary corralling and netting fish? From what I could see they were suckers but they may have had smaller varieties of game fish and other invertebrates. Is this allowed? I don’t think the fishing regulations allow this? Any thoughts?
Thanks

You can net bait fish from waters that dont have a bait ban or restriction. You just have to release any game fish.

Not sure what the regs are in your area for bait.

My guess would be they were children playing. Not so nefarious or dangerous as some other activities they could be engaged in.

Maybe they are doing it just for fun. Being kids and doing kid things. We use to do that with a towel in Northern Ontario. (Sioux Lookout) and we would see all the minnows and different types but let them all go.These minnows were keepers LOL Funny as hell to just try and get one in your hand and have it jump right out and back to where they come from. Hrs of entertainment at 9 yrs. old LOL

My kids do this at the beach sometimes, net minnows and water bugs, keep them in a pail for a little while and watch them, then let them go. Legal in the locations that we frequent as they are invariably shiners.

Sounds like the kids where intersted in fishing and the outdoors you should go over and talk to them and maybe teach them about the different fish in their net ,show them What bait fish are what game fish are how to properly handle them. Pretty good chance they will be the next generation of Alberta outdoorsmen may as well get them on the propper track.
