Default Remington Model 597 22.cal

I was about to purchase one of these 22.cal yesterday at Bass Pro until the young guy behind the counter had said the only thing he had heard about the rifle was that they jambed. This was the first that I had heard of this. The last 22 that I owned that was a semi auto did jamb with cheap ammunition.

If anyone owns one and can shed some light, I would appreciate it.

Cheers,

RT

Default 597

They will jamb like a bastard until you take em apart WHEN BRAND NEW and clean all the dried up grease off the two slides that action operates on and coat them with a light oil or graphite. Also another HUGE problem is the clips that gun comes with. Take a file and clean up the mold marks on the clip and it will be problem free from there. I have one and it drove me crazy at first until I talk to Pud at bashaw sports after his two pointers you'll go through as much ammo as a 10/22 owner LOL. Have fun

x2 on Denny's note
L'il shooter has owned a 22mag 597 for a number of years and it has been a great gun....up there in our collection of firearms. Clean it up and you should be fine...the 10/22 is a better choice with much more after market options you may wish to consider...depending on budget and what you are looking for...

I like my 597 and don't have any jamb problems.
Cheap ammo, wrong shape bullet, low power stuff can maybe cause issues; like any semi-auto .22.
The tweaks mentioned are great ideas before even firing the gun. Give a good clean and polish and lube and you are ready to go.
Magazines are easily made better if problems exist. 50/50 for mine.
25(28?) round clip available.
Trigger kit and few other mods available, enough to make it a nice shooter; but the 10-22 has way more.

Never have a problem with mine unless it gets dirty. Go figure I know.
When I do my part it works great. I can usually run about 3 bricks of stingers thru it before it gets sticky. After a decent cleaning I'm good for another 1500 rounds or so.

X3 on DennyV's statement as well. I have the heavy barrel with the laminate stock and I like it. I've lubed the slide rods with graphite. Mine is very accurate.
