Default I am now a one gun hunter.

Finally made it down to a one gun hunter. I kept my Ruger M77mk11 30-06 in stainless laminate with a Leupold FX3 6x42.
I have a question and would like your opinions. I am looking for an all purpose bullet for deer, black bear and elk. I do re load. So what would you recommend?
Would you consider putting on a Swaro z5 with BT or BRH reticle ? Or keep the leupold and sight in for max point blank range. I can’t see me shooting past 400yrds.
Thanks for the help.

If you can find them, I would be loading a 165 accubond for an all purpose bullet.

Congrats on downsizing...I recall you struggled giving up on the 444 Marlin.

If it was mine I would be shooting 150 TTSX Barnes which seem to be readily available, unlike Accubonds. For hunting rifles I don't like twisting dials much and have learned I don't care that much for Christmas tree reticles that need a chart either. I do like the Leupold B&C reticle, though. Sighted at 200 you are good to 500 with pretty much any 2900-3000 fps load.

I also always liked MPBR sighting since most game is taken inside 400 anyway. Sight it 3 high at a hundred and your mpbr should be around 325, hold high but still on fur for 400. And think of all the money you saved not buying that Z5.

175gr LRX

Good to about 500yds. I have no intention of shooting that far at game.

I think the Z5 2.4-12x50 would be the perfect scope for that rifle. I normally don't like 50 mil objectives but the low power of 2.4, I would make that trade off. I would probably go with the duplex and BT as I found the BRH a little busy for me.

Bullet weights between 165 and 180 would be ideal ...lots of good choices

I have never owned a 30-06 but I think I will be soon. Seems like a great option for what you want.

I use 150 or 165 gr bullets in all my 30 caliber rifles. I have three, a 30-06, a 30-30 and a 303. Okay so the .303 is not really a 30 cal, but it's close enough.

I like to know what to expect from the bullets I use. I find that when I mix and match I loose track of what I loaded in what cartridge.

I don't hunt much any more, too many health issues, but when I did I took plenty of Moose Bear and Deer with either a 150 spitzer or a 165 btsp.

My primary objective is putting meat on the table so I'm more focused on making the shot count then taking a trophy, that frees me up to wait for a shot I feel confident I can make.

For me, that's a lung shot. So, I don't need a high priced bullet to get the results I want. Just about any bullet will do.

I don't shoot at ranges past 200 yards, my hands have never been steady enough for that, besides, I seldom see game further then that, where I can't stalk to a range I feel more comfortable with.

To each their own. I can't and won't advise anyone on what will work best for them. Everyone has their own criteria and I'm not an expert.

What works for me may not appeal to anyone else and that's fine.
I hunt for no one but me.

As for scope choice, I've had such poor luck with scopes over the years I prefer to avoid them when possible.

I know less then nothing about Swaro and have had poor luck with Leupold, so I'll leave it to others to make those recomendations.

I have other rifles but for big game season, all I carry is my 06 now too. I’m using 150g TTSX’s with H4895. Load is doing 3000 fps and is very accurate in my Tikka.

It may come down to what you can get vs what you would like to use for a bullet. Although Neerlandia Co-op had a pretty good selection yesterday.

Yup.....find one brand that groups well and never look back!

On another note pick up a back up rifle too, I always bring two when going on hunts away from home just in case something goes south with your main rifle at least you can still carry on hunting.

That’s what I use in my 308. Been very hard to find any without paying insane prices for them. Thankfully my rifle likes them and they were the first and only thing I’ve tried. Last group I shot was less than 1/2” which is excellent for me!

The op won’t go wrong with a 165 or 180 accubond or tsx/ttsx in a 3006. Whatever you find I’d recommend buying as many as you can because who knows when you’ll find them again.

Makes me miss my 06.

I used to shoot 165 AB only for years. Then switched to 168 Etips for a couple then back to the 165s then they got hard to find so 150 ABs but ended up completely switching to 165 interlocks.....lol they all work. Still have a box of Etips and 150ABs on the shelf and my last 30 or so 165 ABs....honestly I havent found much of a difference on deer between the interlocks and the noslers out to 350 or so so I have just switched to the cheaper bullets....This is in a 308...my 30-06 I have tried all these as well in the 180gr weight....decided the Hornady were just fine too..... neither of these rifles are the one I grab when chasing elk or moose especially if shots might be a bit further out but I have no doubt a well placed bullet will do the deed...

A good bonded or mono metal 150 grain bullet will do the trick. Put it in the vitals and they all die. Pick the most accurate one.

Thanks for all the great replies. I’m excited going back to my original set up with this rifle. I traded in a Mohawk 600 right hand for a left hand Ruger at wholesale sports back in the day. I hunted almost 30 years with a right handed rifle and was so excited for that Ruger. It was all I could afford back then. Any way I’ll be back in town from my elk hunt on Monday and will start looking for components.
By the way haven’t seen any elk yet and a rainy day here today.
Thanks.

What about a Swarovski Z3 3-10x42 with the 4A reticle? You’re not shooting long distances and don’t need a fancy reticle. I’ve been a one rifle guy and use it on my 270Win and love it. Turn it down for tighter shots and up to the 10x if needed. I use to use the same Leupold 6x42 and after going to this scope I couldn’t go back.

Default 168 tsx

I like the 168 TSX at 2,925 fps for everything.

This ^ especially if you want to use MPBR. The 168 is a good choice as well. Whichever your gun likes better.

BUT MPBR works to around 300 yards +/- a few, and causes a lot of misses under field conditions at the min and max, especially when using slow loads (under 2800 fps).

400 yards requires calculated and confirmed holdover aim points.

I would keep the Leupold, and keep shots to 300 or less.

I just bought a few boxes of 150TTSX myself, thinking I'll try it next year. Glad to hear it's working well for you.

That is the exact scope we just put on my Godson’s new rifle and it is stellar. For $1000 I don’t think you can find a better hunting scope. Love that reticle.
